Hotel Erwin A Joie de Vivre Hotel Los Angeles Reviews
Great location....by day! Sep 25, 2010
We were attracted to this hotel by its clever marketing. A bold website, Facebook and Twitter feeds and a hip and trendy image. I know this is what hotels do but the more a place builds up its image like this, the bigger the disappointment is when the reality doesn’t quite match the hype.
Maybe the place was a reality check for us because we had come straight from Vegas where the standards of accommodation are generally exceptional on the Strip, but we couldn’t help but feel a little let down. The hotel is nicely turned out, clean and well maintained but the room was pretty basic and although we could see the beach, the small balcony looked over a very unattractive passageway containing dumpsters and graffiti. The bathroom was particularly basic and was more in keeping with a bedsit than a ‘boutique’ hotel. We complained but after being shown alternative rooms we decided to stay put as there was nothing better on offer. As far as we could tell the only rooms with any kind of decent view were suites which were considerably more expensive.
A big part of the hotel’s marketing campaign focuses on their ‘Hash’ and ‘High’ facilities. ‘Hash’ is marketed as a trendy boutique cafe but the reality again doesn’t quite match the hype. ‘High’ is the rooftop bar that actually does live up to the publicity. The bar has terrific 360 degree views of Los Angeles with the Hollywood Sign in one direction and the beach in the other. The area is well fitted out and has heaters for those chillier evenings. The only issue I had with High was the extortionate price of their drinks. It holds the record for the most expensive bottle of beer I have had anywhere in the world.....and I have been in some nice bars in my time.
The hotel’s other strength is also one of its weaknesses....the location. Located right on Venice Beach it is perfectly situated to explore this fascinating part of LA and I would recommend it to anyone who likes to people watch...during the day! At night, as we were warned by numerous people, it is a different matter and Venice Beach is not an area that should be explored at night. We found this a little disconcerting but fortunately we had a hire car so we were able to travel to other areas at night so it wasn’t too much of an issue.
On the subject of cars, another big gripe is the valet only parking which is always pricy and so inconvenient if you want to just get to the car to collect something you need. I’d much rather park myself thank you.
The staff and levels of service were, without exception, excellent. Every member of staff we encountered was friendly and helpful and couldn’t do enough to help us out with requests for directions, restaurant recommendations and other information.
