Good Prices for New rooms in an Old hotel. Good Location too. May 15, 2010
Where in Melbourne can you find a place to stay in a hotel? A place whereby the price is good for what you get?
Welcome to Hotel Enterprize! Be shocked the moment you enter, the place looked rather old with nearly wornout carpets that seemed to be there for over 30 years. A small fireplace and sofas around to sit on whilst waiting and talking. An old-fashioned reception area whereby they still have those slots for the keys. Oh, mind you that the key's tag is a HUGE piece of 'gold' metal.
OLD & NEW:
There are newly upgraded rooms as they had added extra levels from the fourth to sixth floor behind the hotel (courtyard part). The old rooms with poor furnishing are all located on the first to third floor (try to avoid booking rooms on those floors).
Quite classy new interiors for the new rooms. There is a TV for every room and towels are provided. Air-conditioned, fridge, soap and shampoo are provided too. The only thing that they do not have is Wifi and you have to pay for wired Internet.
It is clean but I couldn't give cleanliness as all 5. The small problems, there was what seemed to be a blood stain on the glass door (not the shower door, it was located above 1.3m from ground). The ventilator above the shower was very dusty, it seemed like the housekeeper didn't care.
Amenities was average, that place is just for you to stay and not do any activities there. Smoking is not allowed in the rooms thus, you'll be able to find those ash boxes located on every level. There is no swimming pool and other sports activity place in the hotel.
I wished I could give it at least 4 out of 5 but this would be a 3.5 sadly to say. Why? Mostly the demerit points go to the housekeeping side. What you will read further may seem like I'm a brutal reviewer but I'm only stating the facts and experiences. The staffs (reception and housekeeping) weren't smiling and they just look rather grouchy/snob.
They make up rooms about 10-11AM so if you don't have the 'DO NOT DISTURB' sign outside, they would knock on the door a few times and open the door! Usually I thought rooms are made when you put the 'MAKE UP ROOM' sign. The housekeepers are quite lazy, if you put your 'MAKE UP ROOM' sign out after 1PM, they don't bother to make it up for you. We went out about 2PM and placed the 'MAKE UP ROOM' sign outside and came back to see the sign on the floor, five feet away from the door. I'm VERY certain that it wasn't blown by the wind because of the door handle (not a knob) and the direction it had landed. Common sense would tell you that it was purposely being thrown/tossed aside.
I know they're lazy because in the afternoon till early evening, you do not see any of the room service trolleys outside of any rooms making them up. Only in the morning till early afternoon. It is sad. They're noisy too, shouting and talking loudly to each other. One time, I made the bed before leaving by placing the blanket over. When we returned, the bed wasn't made like how it was the first day we entered. I know they had made the room because the towels were folded. Plain lazy.
For a couple of days, no one cleaned the stain away thus, we had to go to the reception to tell them to remove the stain off and clean the ventilator. GREAT! At least when we returned, the stain and dust were gone. That was one thing good. Oh one more thing, a good housekeeper would place an extra toilet paper when the one in used is finishing. Apparently, they're not alert or could care less. You know what we did? We placed the empty toilet paper core outside on our doorhandle. Just a little hint to the housekeeper that, 'Hey, we need toilet paper...please give us one. Thanz.'
This hotel isn't located in the middle of Melbourne's grid example...near Melbourne Central Station et cetera. The nearest would be Southern Cross and then Flinders Station. It is quite a walk to the shopping area but what I can say is that it is located very close to the CBD area. If you love to walk and don't mind, then this is a place to stay ;) and it is worth the price.
PRICE & PAYMENT:
A$91 per night stay there. I wouldn't know how much for the peak period but we did our booking online. From the site we booked, we had to pay a deposit. You can request to check the room before making full payment. Make payment in cash is better as to avoid paying extra for using your credit card. One more thing, you need to pay an extra A$50 for deposit when you're there. You will get it back once you checked out and present the room key.
Overall I have to say that the new rooms look really nice and cosy to stay in. They're clean and the design is rather chic. Stay in the old ones and I assumed you may complain (a lot).
PS: You will be able to notice the differences from the photos. We managed to snap some photos when the door to one of the old rooms was opened. It wasn't occupied.
