One plus: the location overlooking Lake Ohrid Sep 28, 2012
We booked a package and did not know which hotel we would be staying in advance. After 30-40 minutes driving we reached Hotel Desaret in Pestani (a former fishermen village), about 12 kilometers south of the city center of Ohrid. Hotel Desaret is an enormous complex situated above Lake Ohrid. The views on the lake are marvelous!

We got to the reception, a spacious area in an old fashioned décor, friendly staff. We checked in, got our room key and had to carry our luggage two open air stairs down to the pavilion where we were housed for the next four nights.

The pavilion is a separated building in the garden, the rooms are facing the lake. Walking to the pavilion we had to pass several stray dogs. Later the dogs turned out to be barking and whining at night. Some dogs only looked at us, others tried to get your attention by following you. Once we came to the pavilion we had to carry up our luggage again to get to room 204, which is on floor 1. The room was not that small, but overfilled with furniture. Beds were okay, floor very dusty. Bathroom not very clean, but not very dirty either. You had to be lucky to have some hot water, two mornings we didn’t have any. Small television, no a/c. Balcony with a nice view on the garden and lake. Free wifi in the reception area.

Later we were told the rooms in the pavilion are the recently renovated rooms…. Couldn’t believe it. The hotel seemed to have been closed for about 20 years and now they are renovating the complex.

First we had a drink at the terrace (service very slow, but you can walk to the bar yourself, the lady bartender was very friendly). A small bottle of wine (containing a large glass) for 2,5 euro.

We had dinner and breakfast included. Food basic, monotonous, but okay. And I have to say we booked an attractive prized package, so we could not expect a luxury hotel with fancy food. Staff in the restaurant seemed to be tired, not very friendly (although we had one assistant waiter who was very friendly, he didn’t speak one word English, he did speak a few words German and did his best!!).

The first two (weekend) nights there were parties in the hotel, very loud, but well, earplugs can be handy, always have them with me when traveling.

We returned for one more night after our trip to Albania. Now we were housed in room 238 in the head building, behind the reception. Plus: an elevator. But that was the only plus. Have a look at the photos. Decrepit furniture, a dirty bathroom. In the mean time I understood that the rooms in the pavilion were renovated!!!

One floor down a bunch of kids were running around in a big lounge (all facilities closed). It looked like employees with their families were living there. I was happy we only had to stay one night in this room. A short night as we had to get up at 5 am to go to the airport. Because of this early departure we were provided with a breakfast bag, which was okay.

Hotel Desaret, a beautiful location, but much work to do…………
