Small hotel in the colonial zone of Santo Domingo Feb 24, 2014
We booked this hotel directly via their website several months in advance. We were quoted a rate of US$40 a night and decided to take it. The one thing that attracted us was we didn't have to pay any deposit, (which is very rare nowadays) and our emails were answered promptly.

We also decided to take their airport pick up service at $40 per trip. When we arrived and came out of the Immigration/Customs area the driver was there with a sign with the hotel name. We didn't know it then, but he turned out to be the hotel owner himself, a Swedish man who has been a resident of the Dominican Republic for a number of years. He has a nice air-conditioned SUV, and speaks English as well.

The hotel itself is a small one. There are only 6 rooms. Our room was small too, but quite comfortable with attached bathroom, a small refrigerator, cable TV and a safety deposit box which came in useful as we never want to take our passports outside the hotel when traveling. The air-conditioner (a necessity in the Dominican Republic) looked new and worked well too. The bathroom had a shower booth which I prefer anytime to a bath tub. However, I could get internet connection only in the lobby, but it worked fine.

The best part is the location of this hotel. It is only about 5 minutes walk to El Conde, supposedly the most famous street in the city. And the 'Malecon' the very long seaside promenade is just a stone's throw away. We went to both places everyday while we were in Santo Domingo.

Breakfast was not included in the room rate, but coffee is available at all times although you have to ask the receptionist to make it for you with a charge of $1 a cup. Her name is Mercedes, and as she is the only receptionist she is there 24/7. There is also a small bar in the lobby, but I never saw anybody ordering a drink from it. In fact, we stayed there for a total of four nights, and there were only a couple from England, and a single man from Norway who checked in at the hotel during that time.

By the way, Mercedes the receptionist speaks only Spanish, so it would be useful to know some Spanish in order to communicate with her. I barely got by with a combination of French and English!

As mentioned above, the hotel's location is excellent. There is a small grocery store just opposite the hotel, where you can buy soft drinks, beer and sundry items at reasonable prices. There are a couple of restaurants on the same street as the hotel, plus several roadside food stalls on the sidewalk.

The only downside is that the hotel's entrance is always locked, but it was only a slight inconvenience as the receptionist was there all the time to unlock the door.

No, it's not....considering the location which is ideal for touring the historic/old colonial part of the city.
