Good backpacker hotel in Hama Jan 30, 2011
The Hotel Cairo has a great location right in the center of Hama near the clock tower. I spent one night here, an ensuite single room was priced at 800SYP and breakfast (bread, egg, jam, coffee) was 150SYP. They also have dorm rooms. The hotel rooms are basic with fan and TV. They have internet in the lobby, though it wasn't working when I was there. The hotel is used to backpackers, and offers cheap shared taxi tours to visit Krac des Chevaliers or the Dead Cities. There weren't enough tourists at the time I was there so I ended up doing the tours on regular minibuses.

Along the main street near the hotel are several shops selling the local sweet halawat al-jibn, like a swiss roll made from stretched cheese dough with a sweet filling, dusted with crushed pistachios. A delicious treat! There are also several ATMs here and an internet cafe around the corner.

The only true backpacker place in Syria Apr 09, 2007
Syria is not really known as a backpacking country. It doesn't need to though, since most hotels are cheap enough as they are anyway.

The strangely titled Cairo Hotel in Hama is an exception though. Not only does it cater for the budget traveller with spartan though clean rooms, the amiable owners of the place are also happy to hook you up with any of their tours. You can see almost all of Syria (and Lebanon) by simply booking tours from hotel Cairo. And a tour in this case basically means driving around in style, with a 40-year old Mercedes and a private driver.

The rooms are comfortable though a little bit worn, and have private bathroom, hot water, aircon and TV. Syrian breakfast (bread, jam, labneh and tea) is included and the reception has a safe where you can store your valuables.

Apart from the tours organised by the hotel, the staff will happily answer any other questions about Syria you might have, and can help with Visa applications or transportation tickets as well.

Highly recommended!
