The only true backpacker place in Syria Apr 09, 2007Syria is not really known as a backpacking country. It doesn't need to though, since most hotels are cheap enough as they are anyway. The strangely titled Cairo Hotel in Hama is an exception though. Not only does it cater for the budget traveller with spartan though clean rooms, the amiable owners of the place are also happy to hook you up with any of their tours. You can see almost all of Syria (and Lebanon) by simply booking tours from hotel Cairo. And a tour in this case basically means driving around in style, with a 40-year old Mercedes and a private driver. The rooms are comfortable though a little bit worn, and have private bathroom, hot water, aircon and TV. Syrian breakfast (bread, jam, labneh and tea) is included and the reception has a safe where you can store your valuables. Apart from the tours organised by the hotel, the staff will happily answer any other questions about Syria you might have, and can help with Visa applications or transportation tickets as well. Highly recommended! Part of the Middle East 2007 travel blog

However, the Hotel Cairo managed to trump it by offering us a double room, en-suite and with cable TV for only 550SYP ($12), which was basically the price that Riad had wanted for two places in their dormitory. After checking in we took a brief walk… Waterwheels |
