Hotel Avra Santorini Reviews

Average hotel not too far from the beach May 07, 2014
Hotel Avra is an affordable hotel about 5 minutes away from Kamari Beach. It was not easy for the taxi driver to find, as it's right on the edge of Kamari, and he had to ask several people before finding it.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by name by Maria. I think we were the only ones checking in on that day, which wasn't too surprising because the busy season hasn't started yet.

We were taken up to our room, and I was surprised to see how small it was. The colors were not sophisticated for a hotel close to the beach, it felt more like a bed and breakfast.

When we asked about wi-fi, Maria stated that of course they do have wi-fi. Once we were in our rooms, Maria came to check to make sure everything was alright, and gave us the wi-fi password. However, as soon as she left, we realized that the wi-fi is not working. It did later start to work, but during our six day stay at the hotel, we were only able to get on their internet one or two nights. The rest of the time we had to go to a restaurant to use their wi-fi so we can communicate with loved ones back home.

The bathroom, and especially the shower was so small! There was no room to move around in the shower, and bending down to pick anything up is impossible without completely moving the shower curtain. The water also got everywhere in the bathroom.

The bed sheets were so uncomfortable and hard, they felt more like paper than regular sheets. The comforter was disgusting, so I stuffed it in the closet, but unfortunately, the maid puts it on the bed every day while cleaning.

The refrigerator was unplugged, and so was the air conditioning. We had to completely move the refrigerator out of its cabinet to plug it. The safe didn't have a key, and when we asked about it, apparently they charge for people to use the room safe, which we thought was ridiculous.

The breakfast offered is pretty small, with just cereal and breads, and hard boiled eggs.

The staff, for the most part, is nice. One the first day, however, this lady that we asked questions to didn't speak good English, and pretty much ignored us and said we can talk to Maria when she gets back. However, we never seemed to be able to catch Maria when she's there, as she's always away from the hotel. There is a really nice lady Spiridoula, though, that we met later on that was very helpful in suggesting things for us to see and do in Santorini.

Kamari Beach is not where the nightlife is in Santorini. It's more of a family-oriented place. When we wanted to see other parts of the island, it was pretty easy to walk to the bus station about 10-15 minutes away, and ride the bus to the main town of Fira.
