Hotel Ashu Palace New Delhi Reviews
Basic - Simple - Cheap Jan 14, 2009
As the title of this review states, the Ashu Palace is Basic - Simple - Cheap. It is surprising sometimes how these three words combine to equal a good experience. The hotel is relatively clean, the staff polite and accommodating, the rooms sparse and simple, but comfortable. I was not disappointed with my stay here. In fact, I was moderately pleased. I was in India for a wedding and this hotel and other establishments nearby are where many people from the wedding party were staying. In fact, a hotel just across and down the street a bit had a nicer lobby, but inferior comfort I learned. I never felt uncomfortable at Ashu Palace or inconvenienced.
Some basics: This kind of Hotel in India is not located in pleasant surroundings. There is poverty and despair right outside the door, but this is common in many places in Delhi. It is located close to Karol Bagh shopping area and has many places on the street to arrange tourism - a car for the day, or tickets for extended travel beyond Delhi. The vendors are happy to come to the hotel to discuss arrangements with you. Use your own judgement for what is fair. All in all I had a positive experience here. Granted, it's not exactly home away from home, but the staff made up for that in hospitality. Note that I gave it 4 stars on Service because they really made an effort and were so polite and courteous.
If you need a cheap place ($50/night) that is basic and simple with location in Karol Bagh and don't mind the poverty outside on the street and surrounding side streets, then give Ashu Palace a try. I think what it lacks in curb appeal and overall ambiance, it makes up for in how you are treated there - which is as a welcomed guest. You can have food served in the room for an excellent price and the dishes were quite good. All this was done in a manner of service with a smile. I felt a genuine enthusiasm of spirit to accommodate the guests.
One interesting story to tell and I was a bit restless for sleeping one night, so went out for a walk. The desk clerk said I should not wander too far at night, but I didn't intend to go far and just stroll a bit near the hotel. To my surprise, the hotel desk had called our room to tell my girlfriend I had gone out and for safety they were keeping an eye out. One might consider that nosy, but I considered it a nice gesture to look out for their guests that way. This shows they really care about their guests and take pride in their hotel. Not something one experiences much in such genuine ways.
