Hotel Areti Aegina Reviews
Cute, pictuesque and bitterly cold in February Jan 25, 2010
David and I stayed at Hotel Areti in Aegina Island in 2006. We tried several motels but this motel was the only one with someone to rent us a room. It was February and off season. The motel lobby appeared to be the living room of the older couple who lived there.
We rented the room in the afternoon then went out to explore and get dinner. We bought wine to drink later along with some fruit, crackers and cheese.
When we returned to the motel it was freezing outside with a good stiff wind. The lady was serving the man dinner by the fire. We walked up to our room and tried various things to turn on the heat. It just wouldn't turn on. We also tried to get hot water, thinking we could take our showers for the next day a little early. We went downstairs and asked the elderly couple who owned the place how to turn on the heater. They explained it would be on in the morning. OH MY GOODNESS!!! We trooped back upstairs... it was so cold! We put on layers of our clothes and got under the covers. We even had on gloves. We decided to forego the wine and fruit as it was so awkward to eat or drink... besides we were in bed rather than using the little table. It was so funny.
The next morning we still had no heat and no hot water. We decided we could not and would not take that cold of a cold shower. Just the thought of undressing in the frigid air stopped us let alone how “traumatized” we would be after a cold shower. David uses a conventional razor with shaving cream or soap. With no hot water (even if he just scraped his face) he would need to use his toothbrush to keep the blades clear as he gets fairly heavy stubble. He skipped it. We brushed our teeth and walked down to retrieve our passports.
The little couple were having a nice breakfast by the fire. We thanked them and left to get breakfast for ourselves. This motel cost 30 Euros .... at least it made a good story. We believe it would be a nice place when it's warmer. The bed was pretty comfortable and the room was cute. The view was fabulous of the water and docks. A source of heat in the room was all it lacked.
**** note to self: in winter ask if there is heat in the room during the night ****
