Conveniently located hotel with free breakfast. Jan 22, 2017
My wife and I stayed at the 3* Hotel Admiral for 1 night during a weekend break in Geneva in October 2016.

We booked the hotel as part of a package through easyJet; paying a total of £192 for two return flights and a 1 night stay in a Standard Double room with breakfast included. Based on the flight prices, the hotel cost us around £80. We paid in full at the time of booking and paid a small city tax (CHF 3.30 per person) in cash when checking in.

Hotel Admiral is located on Rue Pellegrino-Rossi, just off the main street of Rue des Alpes, about halfway between the central train station (Cornavin) and the banks of Lake Geneva. Walking from the hotel to either takes around 5 minutes. There are plenty of restaurants, cafes and shops within easy walking distance.

The journey from Geneva airport to the hotel is straightforward...and free! All passengers arriving at the airport are entitled to a free train ticket into the city centre. Make sure you collect one from the machine in the baggage collection hall. The train ride from the airport to Cornavin station takes around 6 minutes and from there the hotel can be reached on foot (with a slightly downhill walk) in around 5 minutes.

I had read reviews prior to our visit warning that the hotel is located in the city’s red light district. There’s no denying that - in fact, there is a bright pink sex shop right next door! If you leave the hotel and turn left, you are on Rue des Alpes in under a minute, and you would be largely oblivious to the city’s red light district. If you leave the hotel and turn right, you find yourself in a completely different Geneva; streets filled with adult shops, sleazy bars and shady characters and scantily clad women standing around on street corners. It didn’t bother us, but it’s blatantly there. I must stress, there is nothing at all seedy about the hotel, it merely borders that particular area of the city.

Our room, #21, was located on the second floor. The lift was tiny (only big enough for one person with a piece of luggage), so we always used the stairs instead. It wasn’t a problem as we were only carrying hand luggage.

The view from the window wasn’t great; a littered yard surrounded by the backs of adjacent buildings - but in the distance, above the rooftops, we could just see the top of Jet d’Eau (the famous water jet on Lake Geneva).

The room wasn’t particularly spacious, but nor was it too cramped. It was fine for our short stay. It contained a small wardrobe (which housed a safe), a writing desk and chair, one bedside cabinet and a mini fridge.

The double bed (not two singles pushed together) was comfortable and the pillows were soft.

We didn’t use the flat screen TV, but I switched it on to scan the channels for the purposes of my review. There were a dozen or so Swiss and French channels available and countless satellite channels that were listed but not available to view.

There were sufficient electrical sockets for charging batteries and devices overnight; although we did have to unplug a lamp

The complimentary wi-fi, available throughout the hotel, including in the rooms, was fast and reliable.

The room temperature was automatically set and we couldn’t see a way of altering it; not that we needed to on a comfortably mild October evening.

A kettle was provided, along with cups, glasses, sachets of Nescafe coffee, Twinings tea bags and sugar.

The en-suite shower room was spotlessly clean and modern, with a reasonable sized shower cubicle and very good water pressure and temperature.

Ample towels were provided, as was a hairdryer. There was a wall-mounted shower gel/shampoo dispenser inside the shower cubicle and a liquid soap dispenser next to the washbasin.

Eating out is expensive in Geneva, so we made a point of filling up at breakfast. The buffet breakfast was very reasonable and was available between 7am and 10am.

There were three types of cereal available (muesli, cornflakes and chocolate flakes), yoghurts, fruit salad, fresh fruit (pineapple, melon, kiwis, apples) and dried fruits. There was a selection of breads, croissants and mini pastries, along with sliced and spreadable cheeses, a variety of jams, cold cuts of salami and hard boiled eggs.

Available drinks included apple juice, orange juice, coffee, tea and Ovaltine.

The breakfast set us up adequately until lunchtime.

We arrived at the hotel mid-morning, but weren’t able to check in until 3pm. We were able to leave our luggage in a storage cupboard while we set about exploring the city. We did the same after checking out on the Sunday morning, before picking it up en-route to the airport later that evening.

As with all hotels (and hostels and campsites) in Geneva, we received a complimentary public transport pass (valid for the duration of our stay) upon checking in. This was valid on trains, buses, trams and, best of all, the little yellow boats that ply various routes across Lake Geneva.

Overall, we were happy with our stay at Hotel Admiral. It was conveniently located, provided us with a comfortable bed, an excellent shower and a decent breakfast. By Geneva standards, it was good value. We’d happily stay there again if we ever returned to Geneva.
