How to travel Iceland in a cheap way! Oct 01, 2010
even with the economic crisis that hit iceland badly and made it bankrupt, traveling iceland can still be expensive.

tour operators charge more or less 50 euros for the cheapest day tours per person like "the golden circle" tour, 250+ euros for a combined helicopter and snow mobile ride and almost 500 euros for a day trip to greenland and thats only day tours, some do not even include meals in the trip and eating in iceland is quite expensive compared to western european standards.

the best and cheapest way we found out how to maximize the time and seeing iceland all the way are to hire cares and wild camp BUT it would depend on the season, in summer - which is the high season - the car rentals are so expensive even the normal cars and 3x expensive for off-road vehicles, while in the low season - which is the beginning of october - car prices drop to more than 50% than the prices in summer!

there are catches when traveling iceland in october - one might never know if it's gonna be cold or still warm - you can get 4 seasons in one day or it might rain all the time, or sunshine or already icy and snowing.

as for camping - its still ok to camp since it is in the border of frost, with the right gears, you will be kept warm for the rest of the trip. it is easy to wildcamp iceland after the high season because there are less amount of people traveling and no competition for camping spaces. you can even ask farm owners to let you camp in their farmlands which we did! you just have to be a responsible camper.

sad to say - there are only two airlines serving keflavik international airport - the gateway of iceland - icelandair and iceland express. the catch to get cheap flights is to book a year ahead of time! and for people who live in europe the cheapest flight to keflavik is from copenhagen in denmark. so if there is a night train service or ryan air in yur hometown in europe to copenhagen - book it and get a flight from cph to kef.

you can also bring food and necessities to iceland which can save you money from buying food/groceries - the limit of food to bring is 3kgs. and not worth more than 100 euros/usd.

for our personal breakdown as a group of 13 people w(plus another group traveled with us) ho traveled and circled iceland by renting 4x4's - a landrover defender and toyota landcruiser plus a glacier hike we booked plus petrol for 8 days duration - each of us paid only 260 euros each compared to booking day/customized tours/and or hotels also comparing to 3000 euros cost if you do circling iceland with a tour operator!

*excluding miscellaneous* (souveniers, clubs, alcohol etc.)

plus we saw so much sights in iceland and we have our own time and we can stop anywhere we want since we have our own vehicles. most tourists stay only on the south side of the island but there are as much more interesting sights in the north, east and west of the country!
hiking esjan mountain range - near…
we saw the northern lights at thin…
wild camping in iceland.
strokkur geyser - near reykjavik
