HI International New York Jun 14, 2014
I stayed here when I was in NY.

Hostel is really big and there's lots of people. They have lots of different kinds of rooms and dorms. I stayed in 10 people female dorm room.

Room was big and there were lockers to everyone. Bed was okay. They have air conditioning in the room, which was okay, cause outside was really hot. And cause they have fitted carpet everywhere it smelled weird. (Mainly cause we don't have those in Finland, so it's in my head, but I thought that it smelled dirty..)

They don't have too many toilets in the building though. There's only 2 toilets in the floor and there's lots of people using them. And at the lobby/cafe floor there's no toilets. You needed to go upper floors to use toilets. In our toilets the hand dryer was broken.

Cafe is great and they have lots of things to buy and prices are the same as everywhere else.

There's also kitchen at the basement, if you want to cook by yourself, and it looked really great, I didn't use it.

Metro runs about 1 block from hostel, so it's easy and fast way to go anywhere you want to. Hostel is little bit far from some places, but Central Park is like 2 blocks from hostel, which was nice.

Party hostel in NYC Mar 07, 2013
Stayed at this hostel by the end of july 2012, just looking for both pub and club crawl. This is the biggest hostel in the world also known for its great atmosphere.

Fun started with a barbecue at the patio before going to four pubs that thursday, we were more than 70 people!! On Friday the hostel made a welcome party with some free alcohol, after that the crawl went crazy on two clubs at Chelsea neighborhood! So if you are looking for party in NYC with people from all around the world, this one is totally recommended!!

Great stay Oct 19, 2012
Travelling solo for the first time I was a little anxious about my stay, but I really enjoyed it. I stayed in a 6 person room, had no problems with cleanliness & my roommates were awesome. I was in a room on the street side of the building which could be quite noisy at times but when you're in NYC it's not unexpected.

I went on a few tours which were all great and met some awesome people as a result. I would definitely recommend Jerry's Grand Tour to everyone, Jerry is quite a character which makes the tour that little more enjoyable, that said make sure you're prepared for a long day! We were gone for over 12 hours.

The subway is only a short stroll from the hostel and was packed each time I caught it, even in the early hours of the morning.

If you're unsure about staying at hostels I would definitely recommend giving this one a try. There are people from all age groups staying there & there's always some activity or tour on which you can get involved in if youre wanting to meet some other travellers.

Can't wait to come back again one day!

Best Hostel ive been to ! Dec 29, 2011
I spent 5 nights at this hostel in December 2011/January 2012 , its a great location as walking distance to central park and the subway is a 3 mintue walk away so quite safe to go out at night time and take the subway back. The hostel organises activities every day Eg: i took a walking tour of the whole city with Jerry, a 70year old new yorker which cost 10dollars from 10am to 12am! I also took a walking tour of harlem with Ed (1/2 day) also a new yorker for 10dollars while i was there, they were both excellant, a great way to see the city and meet new people as most solo travellers tend to do these activities. There is also welcome drinks nights each week ! While i was there it was new years eve and the hostel staff organised for groups to go to times square together which was a great idea !

The dorms are nice and clean. I stayed in an 8bed- shared bathrooms which are fine. The hostel itself is big and has a cafe downstairs with reasonable prices and a big kitchen in the basement if you prefer to cook yourself. There is also free wifi for laptops.

I would return to this hostel :-)

Clean, friendly, and plenty of events and tours! Aug 04, 2011
When I first stayed here, I had no idea what to expect. But after reading a few reviews from other websites, I decided to book here. I was very pleasantly surprised!

The rooms are cleaned daily, there's a cheap cafeteria, and there's free wi-fi. However, the speed of the wi-fi is quite slow, so be prepared for that.

There's plenty of space, a massive courtyard out back, lounging areas and some computer workstations. There's also a wonderful selection of tours and events. Some good pub crawls in addition to Jerry's Grand Tour which will take you all over the best parts of NYC for only $10! I would definitely recommend staying here again in the future.

The only downside is the price, which to be honest, is pretty standard in NYC. But other than that, it's great!

Very clean hostel in NYC. Located at the very north western end of central park, makes it a bit out of the way from downtown, however, the subway is only a block away and will take you right to Times Square in minutes!

Although the location seems out far from the central action of NY, it is nice to be close to the park & to see a different part of the city.

Very secure building, with numerous rooms/bunks to choose from. Lockers are available in the rooms, with extra lockers available if needed.

The hostel puts on a number of tours each day, which is a great ay to meet folks from all over the world!

example : 'Dave's central park tour', or 'Gerry's all day tour of NYC'

Cool place to stay - met some wonderful people from all over. I would definitely stay again. Very reasonable and well kept/clean. Great first experience in a hostel :)

Clean, quiet and fun Dec 30, 2010
There are many hostels in New York, but HI places are usually a safe bet. The rooms, toilets and showers are clean, bright and nice, no less and no more than you would expect from a decent hostel.

Don't leave food in your room though -- they tell you not to, and the reason is: rats. The place is clean, but you're still in New York City :)

Do make sure you bring a padlock for your locker in the rooms. There are also lockers for rent in the basement if you're coming early or leaving late (check-in is at 4pm; check-out at 11am).

They claim to offer free Internet. There is in fact an open Wifi network, but ten guests are enough to slow down the connection to a de-facto-useless speed. There's paid Wifi for about $2 a day, which I haven't tried. Finally there are some computers with better internet access for $2/20 minutes. And there's a Starbucks with free internet around the corner. Just keep that in mind if you're bringing your laptop.

The subway (line 1) that takes you right downtown is around the corner. If you're staying for a couple days get yourself a weekly Metropass, and you'll be set transportation-wise. Central park is also two blocks away.

Depending on the kind of room you book you'll get included breakfast vouchers (tea/coffee + bagel + apple) and shower sandals (otherwise $1 or bring your own). Otherwise you can buy breakfast there, or just go to one of the places on Broadway.

One final recommendation: if you're there, don't miss out on the Indian place ("Aangan") on Broadway and 103rd. The food is amazing :)

one of the best hostels ive stayed at Aug 12, 2010
This is almost the perfect hostel. The location is a little away from the sights but apart from that everything else is the way you would want. There is so much going on with at least two walking tours each day and lots of evening activities such as bar tours and comedy nights. They make it so easy to make new friends here. Although there are no sights within walking distace there is a subway stop two minutes walk. Staff are very friendly and would definately stay here again.

Great first time place.... Nov 03, 2009
Went to the HI NYC hostel as a "first time hostel goer" and I did not know what to expect. Everything was well laid out, easy to find and was a fantastic place to meet other people. Pub Crawl with Tim was fantastic! I quick subway takes you just about anywhere in Manhattan. I have been back 2 more times and highly vouch for this place.
Guide....Tim. He's crazy!

great Hostel, very good value. Mar 31, 2009
I would say this is the best hostel I ever stayed in. Maybe they should refurbish the bathrooms but everything else was great. New kitchen with everything you'll need to cook what ever you want to cook. Very good new beds with new matresses and lockers in every room so that your stuff is nearby and kind of "double safe".

Central Park is nearby, the subway is just a minute walk from there and there are some Pubs around to go out for a drink if you don't want to go downtown.

great hostel near the central park Jul 20, 2008
This is one of the best hostels I've been thus far. It's located three blocks from the central park and Columbia university. It also organizes great walking tours that start just outside the hostel, sporting events and concerts. I spent over one week in that hostel and participated in different walking tours almost every day and I had really great time there.

The hostel has 24 hour reception and the security there is very good thank to the secure luggage storage. Rooms are spacious and the beds comfortable, I was a bit disappointed though that guests needed their own lock in the room.

Staff there was very friendly and helpful. They gave us tips what to see in New York and recommended us a very good and reasonably priced hairdresser. I was also glad to notice that there are very many cultural and historical sites nearby as well as good bars and nightclubs.
