Hostel Toruma San Jose Reviews
a more "grown up" hostel Dec 19, 2010
I stayed at Hostel Toruma for two nights on my last trip to Costa Rica, and it turned out to be just what I was looking for at the time. It's a huge hostel, with 3 floors and any type of room you want. I got a six bed mixed dorm, for $13 a night, but I was the only person staying in my room!! I had all six beds to myself, so I put my bags on one, charged my Ipod and phone on one, slept on another, and still had 3 beds to spare. I had been traveling around Central America for 3 weeks on public buses so this was just the break I needed, though I'm sure it isn't always like this.
Hostel Toruma is a former President's house so it's nicer than most Hostels in the area, and offers about anything you could ask for. They have an outdoor pool, free internet access, 24hr reception, free public phone, free parking, and they offer airport pickup for $10. If you are looking for a hostel in San Jose with a more "grown up" crowd I would recommend Toruma. Its a great place to get a good nights sleep, and doesn't have the party crowd that you sometimes find at Pangea or other hostels.
The location is good if you want a place close to the airport and bus stations, but the restaurants within walking distance are all horrible choices. I had to walk my butt off to get a decent meal.
