Comfortable, friendly hostel in picturesque Canarian town Oct 25, 2008
This is a great hostel for anyone wanting to stay in an "authentic" Canarian town away from the tourist traps, but still within easy reach by bus of anyplace you'd want to visit. The hostel is located in a typical Canarian building near the center of La Orotava, a beautiful small town in the hills overlooking the tourist-filled Puerto de la Cruz, which is where the closest beach is. La Orotava itself has hardly any tourists, however, since all the major hotels are down on the coast. The hostel is very comfortable and pleasant with a nice friendly atmosphere. I met all sorts of people of all ages in the few days I was there, and it was no problem to find someone to go down to the beach or go on a hike with if you're travelling alone. The place is also kept incredibly clean, which is a nice change of pace from a lot of other hostels (and some not-so-cheap hotels for that matter). The owner, Manfred, goes to a lot of trouble to keep the place in good shape. He's also incredibly helpful for anything you might need - if he's not going around cleaning something he's helping someone plan a hike, or figure out the right bus to get to the airport, you name it. He also offers hikes himself leaving right from the hostel, which is very convenient if, like me, you tend to just show up at places without having researched what to do and where to go. Oh and I definitely want to mention the showers - plenty of hot water and good water pressure!! The hair dryer in the bathroom is also a nice touch for a hostel. There's also a great little coffee shop on the corner and a several good cheap restaurants nearby. But be warned, if you stay here you have to not mind walking up a steep hill to get to the hostel, or figuring out the mysterious bus schedule from the center of town. But that's really the only thing I can think of that might be considered a drawback. All in all, if you don't feel you have to be right at the beach, this is an excellent spot, both geographically and as far as comfort and atmosphere go, to base a trip to Tenerife.
