Don't be sucked into the Internet and tourbook hype that glistens on everything written about Art Hostel. It is VERY cheap and relatively centrally located and pretty secure (you have to be buzzed in by staff when you enter), and they are very happy to share the one computer with Internet access ... that much is true. The brochure boasts a full breakfast banquet of cheese and bread and fruit and coffee and tea and eggs ... we were given a greasy bag of banitsa unceremoniously dropped on the kitchen counter and left to fight over it like starving rats ... if you wanted coffee, you were referred to a machine ... not a coffee machine in the domestic sense ... a coffee machine in the truckstop sense. The allegedly beautiful garden was run-down and overgreen with weeds and usually filled with drunk, chain-smoking backpackers (though we did manage to meet some great people and have some memorable conversations). Where were the art exhibits, concerts and poetry readings that they mention on their website? Long, long gone (the neighbors complained too much about the noise and the crowds, apparently). The rooms are stuffy and cramped with no AC or fans, and the neighborhood gets pretty loud at night, especially on weekends (there's a popular restaurant just over the garden wall), so good luck getting any sleep. The staff are friendly enough but not knowledgeable or organized enough to help much with tourist info or advice; they pretty much just steer you to the outdated copies of Lonely Planet on the shelves or toward some brochures by the door. We almost missed our bus to Macedonia because the staffmember waited too long to call a taxi for us, then didn't call the taxi company that we requested, instead calling somebody else that he knew (who never arrived). In short, Art Hostel is a decent cheap place if you have no money, low expectations and only intend to party all night and sleep during the day; I wouldn't recommend it for serious travelers.
