Hostel Rio Playa Playa del Carmen Reviews
Hostel Rio Playa Mar 29, 2011
Rio Playa hostel is located half block from 5th avenue, which is nice pedestrian/shopping/restaurant zone in Playa del Carmen. It is actually located in the middle of the avenue, which is super convenient wherever you want to go. It is around four blocks away from major bus station, block and a half from the beach, and most of the clubs/good restaurants/cafes are in range of 2-3 blocks. Other thing to consider is that only few blocks from hostel there is Wal-Mart (never been fan of that store and never will be, but got some great avocados there…) that has very cheap fruits, food, drinks, and most of small things that you would need during your stay, and everything is cheaper than in other stores.
Hostel is on the second floor of some restaurant that plays horrible and loud music most of the day and good part of the night. Entrance is not easy to see and it leads to steep and narrow staircase. Forget about good night sleep if you are staying in one of the large dorms. Next door is also a restaurant with even louder music (they are actually fighting with sound, which is louder…).
Combination of people partying, music and lack of window curtains makes sure that your dreams have to end in 3-4 hours from when you close your eyes… I was in the dorm, which is pretty clean and orderly concerning number of beds. There is one bathroom/shower in the dorm, which is usually fine, and it gets cleaned few times per day. Security is very good, 24 hour reception is right next to the cage-door and to get in they have to open it.
Very good kitchen and area with computers is in the hall. Internet wifi is available through the whole hostel. Second floor hosts few rooms (which looked very nice), swimming pool and bar area. I know that swimming pool sounds great, especially on the rooftop… but it just sounds great… Pool is 3x2 meters, and maybe one meter deep, perfect for putting your feet in it, or sit in it with your buddies, drink lots of beer, and pee without getting out if the pool… Needless to say, I did not get in it, panorama of makeshift Playa del Carmen roofs was good enough for me .
Officially there is breakfast, but it is no more than some coffee, juice, bread, butter and something sweet to put on the bread. I did not even try it because of incredible small shops with huge squeezed juice jars and unbelievably tasty tacos of much variety. Stroll outside of main street to small fresh juice places around, and buy tacos where locals get them… It is cheap and too good to miss, plus you get vibe of the place that is different from taking-picture-all excited touristy eateries. There are few meet places around the town, I can’t remember the name but it is something-fuego… and they are superb with meet and any other meals. Other thing you must try are soups Mexican style , very tasty and filling.
This hostel was pretty cheap for the area (I think that I paid around $12) but if is any how possible try to go to some other place that is a bit quieter. There are few hostels in the range of two blocks around, and I would recommend the Youth hostel better. If there is more people in the group, you can get nice rooms for about 10-15$ per person in surrounding hotels.
