Very Cheap and Okay, But Out of the Way Nov 26, 2011
Located supposedly close to the bus station, the Hostel Lika is a cheap place to stay in Zagreb. And I say “supposedly”, because it did not seem like it was within walking distance from the bus station. I ended up staying in a private room, so the review will be more about that.

From the train station, you need to get on Tram #6, and get off at the stop Slavonska, where you see a highway bridge. From the bus station, you can hop on any tram going that way, away from the town center.

Once you get off, just follow the yellow footprint road. (Sorry I could not resist!). There are yellow footprints stamped on the steps and streets, leading you into a residential neighborhood, and to the hostel. And it’s clearly marked, with the name painted on, very large. This is a huge positive, making it easier to find, and not having to rely on street signs.

But then, the huge negative. When at the entrance, you have to call the number on the door, to let the owner know that you have arrived. For those who don’t carry cell phones while traveling (like me), that’s a very big problem. I ended up using a local’s cell phone, but it should not have to come to that. Someone should be there, as it was within the stated reception hours. I’m sorry, but I just find this very unacceptable. Of course, if you can use your cell phone in Croatia, then this is a non-issue.

Once inside, you are given multiple keys, for the date, entrance to inside, room, and bathroom. It can be a pain to try to figure out which one is which, and you just have to try them all. And each room is designated a bathroom, but I wonder how many people actually follow this rule.

The rooms themselves are very basic, and a little rundown, but okay for the most part. And the bed is comfortable enough. The bathroom is also okay, but a bit cramped. And I did not find any dining room or kitchen, as it was coming towards the end of my trip. There was no internet access at this place.

The owners are very nice people, but could only be reached by calling them. And the hostel is out of the way from the town center, where the attractions are. The good thing is the hostel is in a quiet neighborhood.

Overall, the place itself is not bad at all, and probably the cheapest in Zagreb. And probably would be different and better during the busy season. Still, no excuses if they still open during that time.

If your budget is not too tight, then I suggest you find another place to stay.
