Lush surroundings with adorable live-in chihuahas. Cleanest outside showers ever! Jul 03, 2013
The staff at this hostel was very friendly; Jose greeted me and chit-chat with me many times.

You can cook, have a meal and chill outside, in the lushy green yard that feels like a tiny jungle. The hostel's pet (chihuahuas and cats) will definitely come to greet you, maybe even make a pretty face for food scraps.

I had a room on the upper lever (upstairs); the room was very clean, the mosquito screens on the windows were in mint condition and the ceiling fan did a great job at keeping the room temperature decent. I was not too convinced about the outside showers but they were so clean and roomy, I was pleasantly surprised!

This hostel is well located within the city of Valladolid; you can walk around the city and find a bunch of restaurants, parks, churches and get pleasantly lost. From there, you will also find colectivos or taxis to the neighboring Maya Ruins site (Chichen Itza and Ek Balam).

The bus terminal is also about 10-15 minutes away and you're about 2½ hours away from Cancun.

THE place to stay when going to Chizen Itza Sep 22, 2012
We stayed here for a few nights after having been to Chizen Itza. Valladolid is a very scenic colonial city which is well worth visiting in itself. It is so much better to stay in Valladolid and experience the city and Chizen Itza by yourself then going on one of those organized sheep-tours from Cancun.

The hostel is perfect for a relaxing hangout. IT is one of those places that has superb communal areas where you can easily meet other travelers and socialize with them. There is a long outdoor area with kitchen, hammock space and tables for eating and playing cards. There is also a nice Tv room with lots of movies, and a big screen TV. The dorm is nice and clean and with good beds.

The location of the hostel is very good - close to everything in the central square area.

The proprietors are friendly and give a very thorough explanation of everything worth seeing in the area. We also rented bikes from them, which was a day well spent. We visited the cenotes in the region.

We also stayed in a double room which was superb. Nice and clean, comfortable bed, no noise. We could have stayed here for a week, but had to limit it to 2 days due to time constraints.

Hostel La Candelaria Mar 18, 2011
Valladolid is not a big town, and hostel is placed in a bit quieter area four blocks away from the central park. Hostel 'La Candelaria' is in the park with the same name, surrounded with colonial buildings and very nice church where some ladies were practicing singing every evening. Main bus station is three blocks away and as soon as you get out of the terminal you can see advertising for hostel (that is how I found it…). All busses stop there and it has clean and modern waiting area. There are lots of taxis too, but you do not really need them for such a short distances.

We stopped in Valladolid because it is closest city to Mayan ruins of Ek Balam and Chichen Itza, and there is also lots of cenotes all around the town. We rented bikes from the hostel for 2 bucks and went to all of those cenotes in one day because area is flat and easy to cover with bikes.

Hostel La Candelaria is very picturesque, old open windows (front doors are always open, but you have to unlock chained metal doors every time you get in the hostel ) and very nice, long garden with kitchen and seating area . There is also other kitchen area inside the house, with all you need to cook and prepare your food. Breakfast is free, they make their own bread rolls, and have nice fruit plates. Going through the garden is nice experience for it is kind of divided to areas where you sit, grill, cook, chill, hold your bikes, and in the end there are hammocks hanging from surrounding trees.

Rooms are on the second floor, mostly dorms, six people per room, large lockers for every bed. Price is $10 per bed which is totally fine for the area. There are no doors on the rooms which gives great family character, and stairs to go up are very small and kind of tough to carry stuff upstairs (well, downstairs with your back-pack is tough too). Second floor is not in one level but it goes up and down which adds to the character. Only negative thing I can think about is no enough bathrooms in the place, especially in the morning and with lots of girls in the hostel, but aside of that perfect backpacking dorms. Internet is good and area of the park in the front of the hostel is perfect to sit and chill.

Owner is super-straightforward Dutch guy that lives with his wife on the premises. They have two well behaved Chiwawas that area simply perfect for Mexican hostel 

Warmly recommended!

Nice May 07, 2010
Nice place. Stayed in a double room on the second floor which was pretty good. No AC and hot, though, so while it was bearable in May, I'm not so sure about July or August!

Would stay again.

Full Service, Cheap Hostel Nov 30, 2009
The Hostel La Candelaria is well located to use as a home base to explore the Northern Yucatan. The Hostel La Candelaria is easy to find and is a short walking distance to the Zocalo, a currency exchange office, the tourist office, a laundromat, a good hospital and the post office. The Hostel La Candelaria facility includes a shaded patio, an outdoor kitchen, an area to do hand washing of your laundry, a common room with television and free lockers. Bring your own lock, there were no locks for sale on my last visit. A light fresh fruit breakfast is included in the price. A bunk bed is about $14.00 per night. There are also some private rooms offered at about $30.00 per night. I have used this place because of the location, laundry washing area and I can cook my own meals for my day trips.
