Hostel Fortress Belgrade Reviews

In the centre of the club zone Jun 28, 2014
After a succession of nice accommodation, Hostel Fortress turned out to have been a complete disappointment. The hostel presents well in the pictures, but reality is rather grim.

It is very conveniently located 5-minute walking distance from the city centre and the Kalemegdan fortress; the central bus and the railway station are only 500m away. One would think: ‘perfect’. What the hostel does not mention, is the fact that they are located in the middle of a night club zone of the city. With single-glazed windows facing the walkway, the location does no longer seem so attractive (unless the reason for your visit here is to party). Whether you left your window shut or open, you would still hear all night music at the same force. Not an ideal arrangement before a long day around the city. So we suffered all night with barely any sleep.

I guess we would not have complained as much if it was the only thing that went wrong at this hostel. But there is more to the story.

When we arrived the place was nearly empty. Most people have just left. We got checked in and taken to our private double room. The room wasn’t impressive with only enough space for a double bed and a small cabinet. Not much room to move around, but then again since we were staying here only one night, it appeared not that significant.

Bathrooms were located past the common area, and divided between female and male guests. Unfortunately, the general cleanliness was a slight issue here – some dirt was visible on the floor and in the shower cabins. No toilet paper was found in any of the female toilets. I had to dive in into the male toilet to get some as no staff had access to a new supply. Quite bizarre for a hostel arrangement.

The common area, consisting of an L-shaped sofa with a table, was right next to the open-plan kitchen. The kitchen, with bar-style seating, was quite suitably equipped, but there was not even a single spot that wasn’t dirty (we were told by the staff they had a big party last night). The staff did not make any effort to clean this area, leaving all dishes and cutlery in a complete state. We had to wash every single peace we wanted to use to prepare our breakfast the next morning, in addition to the counter itself. It was quite disgusting, and disappointing that the staff took no care of the kitchen.

So after nearly a sleepless night, and a morning kitchen clean up before breakfast, we already fell low on energy before heading out to the city. Not the greatest experience and the one to remember for all the wrong reasons.

The hostel offers private parking on site which is very handy since there is no other parking available close by. It is spacious enough to easily accommodate few small cars.

Free Wi-Fi worked fine during the stay.

Cleanliness – I would only score this place 3 out of 10 (read above), and that is being generous.

Overall experience – although the staff was helpful and welcoming, they take no interest in keeping the place clean therefore, turning it into a total mess; location is perfect, but only if you come to the city to party; for sightseeing purposes, either choose a different place to stay, or make sure you bring ear plugs; to my regret, the hostel does not get my vote of recommendation.

Price per night per room - €25 which is far too expensive for this accommodation.

It doesn't look that bad as the pictures were taken late afternoon just before we left. Someone has already cleaned the common area a little.

From your photos this place doesn't look too bad, but reading your review I can understand that it gets only 3 of 10 points. Interesting review anyway.
