Hostel Carpe Diem Zagreb Reviews
Below average hostel May 04, 2011
This seemed like the only hostel in the area. According to my guidebook there were supposed to be many hostels just over from the train station but no luck, they were all condemned buildings so this is how I ended up at the Carpe Diem Hostel.
The hostel wasn't the easiest to find and it's location isn't all that close to anything. I had bite to eat from a cornerstore and it was a very wide burger about the size of a salad plate. Catching a bus downtown involved crossing a highway but i know there's another safer bus stop but this one was closest according the guy who had been here before.
As for the hostel, nothing great to be honest...
The social room was much like a parent’s basement from the 80’s with a couple of worn down couches with an ugly table in the middle. Felt like it was furnished from things found on the side of the road. The social area was not comfortable and was very crowded with only a few people.
The other travelers were great though. I met a couple groups from England and another from Copenhagen and we had a great night going to some local bars and pubs with someone who had already been to Zagreb before so that was fun!
The owner was intimidating (think a Croatian Tony Soprano) and he demanded I hand over my passport in order to stay the night. Handing over a passport isn’t as collateral isn’t uncommon but the way he was asking it felt more like a ransom.
Even when checking out he held the entire stack of passports in his hand and asked me if I had paid him for the night. Of course I did as he’s the one I handed my cash to not 12 hours prior. He then checked my name off in his book an flipped through about 10 passports before getting to mine. I wasn’t in a big rush but it took way too long.
There was one girl working there and I guess she was helpful enough but I can’t imagine why anyone would work there for as long as she had.
As for the rest of the hostel, I didn’t see much of it. I showed up, went out drinking, slept in a bunk-bed which was no better or worse than any other bunk and left first thing in the morning.
