Ola Amigo…

Hostel Amigo is 3 blocks from the center square of Mexico City, and same distance from two or three metro stations. Finding it is very easy if you have any sense of direction. Coming from Bus station there is excellent metro connection, and coming from the airport there is metro too, but depending from witch terminal you are coming it could be longer of shorter walk. Just to mention it again, underground system in Mexico City is excellent, with great coverage, frequency, clean and orderly. Area around the hostel is full of life during the day, but at night everything dies very fast. There are few bars in the area, but for clubs you’ll need to go 4-5 blocks away.

Entrance is tucked in, strong metal buzzer door with 24h security/reception service. Entrance floor has nice bar with cool characters doing bartending and DJ work, few computers and rooms for language and large stuff that you might carry around. Bar area is a major hangout, with good music, well priced beer and movie nights almost every night. Two floors above are filled with dorms that are a bit overcrowded with beds, but they have all necessary things such as lockers and lots of power outlets. I changed two rooms and both did not have a window which is HUGE minus, but rooms are clean, and beds were comfortable.

On the second floor there is other communal area with few tables where you can eat free breakfast (which is usually all you can eat pancakes) and large toilets/showers. There was no hot water when I was there, but weather was good. My room’s door was facing that area, and it was pretty noisy during the night and morning because it is area that everyone passes by to go out or in. Solve that issue with ear plugs… Price was a bit more than in few other hostels in town, but I wanted to be in the center and $10 is not too different than $9.

I usually check cool places in the town, but must see things are city’s fresh food/meet markets that are located close to the bus station and they have their own metro station called Merced. There are many museums, but anthropology museum is really special, and try to get to the pyramids of Teotihuacan if you have time. Hostel has few tours organized, and one that covers pyramids is cheap, well run and very educational (they take you to four different places to see cathedrals, old city and pyramids outside). Many locations are more or less tourist traps (such as canals or markets in Coyoacan…) but it is easy to go around and if you have time and money, power to you.

Whole city center is one huge market that is divided by kind of merchandise that is sold. There are few streets only with prom dresses, audio equipment, sports equipment… Pedestrian area is nice and spacious, and few streets behind the main square host amazing black market/street vendors doing some super cool things (like making baby Jesus, including repair, waxing on the street…).

In general it is ok place to sleep and run around.

Nice affordable hostel Jun 18, 2011
It's a really nice hostel located near the zocalo (Main square). It's a big building where the staff is lovely and like to party in the bar near the lobby. Everything is clean and has really good prices for what it is. I strongly reccomend it
