Hostal Mamallena Feb 22, 2014
Hostal Mamallena in Boquete is sister hostel of the same name place in Panama City. Location of the hostel is very central, right on the main square of the town and pretty visible with all signage they have on the building. Bus that takes you from David stops right on the square, some 30 meters from the entrance, so it is like they are part of the station. Park has few nice trees and super ugly “modern” fountain that does not fit the place at all.

Building is old, wooden, bluish two story building that expends in the back towards small garden. Reception area is spacious with a dinner bar stools in the front of the desk. WiFi internet if available all over the place and signal is pretty good. All people at the reception speak English and they are very helpful.

Bottom floor has few rooms, but most of them are on the second floor. Only complaint I could have is for the number of restrooms and showers that are available for rooms without bathroom. There is only two baths and two showers that you can use, and they are in high demand at certain parts of the day like morning and evening. Whole place is pretty clean and ok maintained.

First floor also features good kitchen that you can use to make your stuff and also prepare your breakfast. Breakfast is offered as a part of stay and it consists of coffee, pancake mix and some sugary maple syrup. You can potentially make as much as you want of it, but there is usually too many people trying to do same thing so waiting kills any desire you have for it. Across the kitchen there is a large living room with some sofas and tables. Outside of the house, little garden with tables and chairs is where most of people hang out during the evening.

My room was on the second floor, dormitory with six beds. Room is not too big, but there is enough space for movement. There is AC in the room which is not really necessary in this area, but it did not hurt to have it. Beds are sturdy and have very good mattress. There are small lockers on the first floor where you can put your electronics and other important stuff.

They offer bunch of different tours for very touristy prices. They do have really good guides, most of them locals that have been living there all their life and know lots about flora and fauna of the area. They even have experienced guide to take you see different birds (which is important selling point this days). They will give you all information you need if you are into doing stuff yourself, and there are also some free maps that you can have and follow those routes. They have shuttles to Bocas del Toro that will set you back some $30. You can do this trip yourself for $17 if you just take local transport, so see what is an better option for you.

In general it is a good place to stay in town.
