Don Popo Jun 29, 2014
Hostal Don Popo is probably the nicest hostel in Matagalpa and I got to it by accidently seeing the advert on the bus station. Matagalpa is placed in the canyon and it is pretty long, so if you arrive on the south station (which is where most of the newcomers arrive to because buses from Esteli and Managua come there) you will have to walk or take cab to the center of the town which is more than 10 blocks away. Second, more local bus station is closer, just around the hill, located in the middle of the large market area. I walked there and it is not a problem, but with high sun shining that walk can be very sweaty.

Don Popo is half block from the largest cathedral in town. It is very easy to navigate to the cathedral because almost all roads lead to it, but it is not that easy to find Don Popo. There is a small hanging sign above the door and that is it. Entrance is very tight. Old small door have metal gate that is always locked and requires someone to open it for you. Owner lives in the first room on the right so he is always there, or you can call lady that makes food and cleans and she will open the door during the day. Hostel is made in old family building that got a bit expended and renovated. Reception is a small, kind of fancy, and it does not look like there is real reason for it, but it exists. WiFi is available but if you need computer there are many super cheap internet cafés all over the place. Main floor is full of rooms and dorms, but there is also a basement (used to be an garage) that is turned into play room, movie room and couple of sleeping quarters.

Play room has billiard table and you can even work out on few machines. TV room is super cool, features huge TV and two incredibly comfortable theatre chairs that collapse and you can easily fall asleep in there… Loads and loads of variety movies fill some serous space. Very good place to chill.

There is fee breakfast in the morning and you can choose from couple options. I always take whatever is local so it was Gallo Pinto this time. Kitchen is free to use, it is very large and well equipped. Coffee is free all day long and it is just fantastic! Matagalpa is the most famous region for coffee in Nicaragua, they have coffee museum that you should visit (it is free to see) and I even bought some old coffee bags and will make pillows out of them.

Dorm is super clean with private bathroom. Nothing much to say about it, see the picture I added, it is great place. Bathroom has only cold water and water pressure is a bit weak but you will survive.

There is one more feature and it is kind of the balcony-nest area on the roof. Stairs to go up there are super steep and you should not operate them drunk… Balcony has seating for 6-8 people and small functional grill. It is overlooking the Cathedral and surrounding. It is just a perfect spot to spend evenings with newly made friends.
