Lovely Art Nouveau example Mar 01, 2011
Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, a functional hospital is one of the best examples of Art Nouveau not only in Barcelona, but in the world! I know some people might feel weird going to a hospital for a tourist visit, but this building is truly spectacular!

It was built between 1900 and 1930 by Catalan architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. He also built Palau de la Musica Catalana, and both are on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

The hospital has the main building with the clock tower, ten pavilions, streets and gardens. It's like a small town.

There's lots of red brick, mosaics depicting historical subjects, stained glass, great staircase and amazing ceilings.

Beautiful Avenue Gaudi leads uphill from Sagrada Familia cathedral. It's a nice short stroll and is well worth just walking around the hospital. If you're coming to visit the cathedral, think about spending a little more time and seeing another amazing architecture delight of Barcelona!

There's an info booth inside, and they organize guided tours in different languages (English, Spanish, and Catalan). Tours are not free.
