Hospederia Alcantara Hotel Caceres Reviews
A convent turned hotel in Alcantara Mar 23, 2010
There are not a lot of choices for lodging in Alcantara, but the Hotel Hospederia Conventual de Alcantara was a nice hotel no matter where it's located. It used to be a convent, and had the thick walls, and hallways to prove it. The room was spacious, and came with a computer running Linux. The hotel restaurant served delicious dinner, and breakfast buffet was good too. The pool was closed due to the season I suppose, but the grounds of the hotel was pretty and interesting. A very pleasant place to stay for sure.

Hospederia Alcantara Hotel Caceres Overview
The Hospederia Conventual de Alcantara hotel is located in the eastern part of the town of Alcantara, close to the access road on the dam and the Roman Bridge, on the road going towards Iberdrola. The centre of Alcantara is about 700 m away. Alcantara Roman Bridge, the Convent of San Benito, Santa Maria de Almocovar Church, the Jose Maria de Oriol Dam and the River Tajo are located in the vicinity and can be easily reached on foot (a 15 to 20-minute walk). Caceres is about a 45-minute drive away.
The hotel is housed in a former Franciscan monastery, which dates back to 1478. It was originally built by Bartolome de Oviedo, and was later renovated in the seventeenth century by the Marques de Buscayolo. More recently it saw use as a flour mill and guests can still see some of the machinery from this time on the ground floor, where a small ethnographic museum is also housed. It was renovated again in 2007. The building has two floors and an attic. The 3.000 m² of floor space available has been divided into 30 rooms, of which 23 are doubles, 2 are suites and 5 are superior rooms, as well as communal areas such as the cafe and the restaurant. It has a lobby with 24-hour reception. Lift access also features. Conference facilities are also available, as is WLAN access. Room and laundry services are also available. Guests arriving by car may wish to make use of the parking facilities provided.
All of the rooms come fully furnished and are decorated to provide guests with a room both different and authentic. All come equipped with a fully fitted bathroom, and provide air conditioning and heating, plasma TV, complimentary minibar, direct dial telephone, safety deposit box and Internet access. Disability friendly rooms are available on the ground floor. Terraces also feature as standard.
Upon entering the communal area one can't help but notice the museum, which displays machinery from the former flour mill that operated in the building. It now occupies 3 floors in what used to be the monastery church. There is an air of serenity and tranquillity in the hotel, which guests will experience as they take a walk through the gardens or relax by the swimming pool located in what was previously the market gardens belonging to the monks. Guests can also make use of the sun terrace.
The hotel offers an appetising breakfast buffet. An ample choice of dishes is also offered in the restaurant, where the menus can be adapted to facilitate the individual wishes of customers. The restaurant Kantara also offers excellent service and cuisine based on a daring mix of the traditional and the modern. Recommendations include the Arroz Cremoso served on a base of Torta del Casar, a dish typical to the region. Canelon with ox tail is a good example of the traditional dishes on offer.
Guests are advised to go to the centre of Alcantara and then take the road towards Portugal. Proceed along this road and take the first right (approximately 1 km outside of town) to find the hotel.
