Hospedaje Restaurant My Friend Huanchaco Reviews
Best Value in Peru Jul 03, 2011
My Friend Hostel is great alternative that I did not find listed in the book I had. Only block away from La Casa Suiza, this surfer’s hostel is perfect, cheep solution for backpackers. Cost of 10 soles per night for dorm simply can’t be beaten by anybody or anything (aside of sleeping in the park). Being “surfer’s hostel” includes cool and relaxed people working for it.
Whole bottom floor is restaurant with good variety of dishes, and good breakfast. I love the handmade tables with sand under the glass top and many different dried sea creature and shells, a bit creepy but cool… All walls are covered with pictures from times and waves past, so similar to Italian restaurants, but without cheesy “To my friend Vinnie…”
Dorms are on the second floor and you get to them trough other solitary door facing the street. Staircase for one takes you to the balcony overlooking the restaurant, and taking you to different rooms. My dorm had one bed and two bunk beds fitting total of five and kind of clean bathroom with shower. Door of the bathroom does not really close all the way so privacy is a bit limited, but they will probably fix that issue sooner or later. Beds are comfortable, room is a bit hot during the night, but in general it is good dwelling. Wireless internet is very good, and you can use it in all the areas of the hostel.
It is located on the main street going in the town, and you should get out of the bus two blocks after bus turns into the city. Those two blocks are also the distance from the beach, which is not really for swimming, but very good for surfing. Waves for few days that I was there were more than perfect.
This city’s fame is about surfing and really cool fishing rafts made of straw. There are few really good ceviche restaurants all over the town, food is really first class, and more than affordable. Market is small and not really interesting at all. Few stalls that sell food have some kind of mixed local soup that is worth trying but not that good at all.
Few kilometers towards the Trujillo there are amazing ruins of Chan Chan with kilometers of walls, buildings and palaces. Everywhere you go there is tons of ceramics from old civilization and little hills hiding buildings and who knows what… Few palaces and temples are uncovered and they are worth visiting. When you get ticket for one of the palaces, it is valid for few more places around and also you can get in the museum (if it is not Monday…). Only requirement is to do all places of Chan Chan in one day, which is not difficult at all. Aside of this ancient city there are few other sites around Trujillo with remains of old civilizations.
Bus from Huanchaco to Trujillo goes very often and it is super cheep, It costs 1.5 soles to go between this towns and they are super fast and reliable, so do not even think of getting cab and waste money...
I had very good time in this hostel, so I am recommending it !!!
