If you are bound for Maui and enjoying hiking, then Haleakala National Park is a must. At a minimum, you have to drive up to the summit and catch sunrise or sunset and witness the amazing silversword plants. Assuming you are based around Lahaina, the drive to the summit probably takes two hours – and you will be ascending about 10,000 feet!
You reach the park entrance at roughly 6,500 feet, and here is a basic hike that includes some native Hawaiian flora & fauna, the Hosmer Grove Nature Trail. A very easy loop (only about a half-mile) that winds through a forest, the trailhead begins in the Hosmer Grove parking area. Make the first left above the park entrance station and you should find it without difficulty. I think there is a brochure right at the trailhead which remarks upon some of the plants and birds you might see. This is likely the easiest trail in Haleakala, but there are many more opportunities. A brilliant National Park! |
