Hoover Dam Overview
Built between 1931-35, the Hoover Dam (or Boulder Dam) was designed as part of an agreement to help assign water equally between Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico. The dam sits in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River just a few miles southeast of Las Vegas near Nevada's border with Arizona. It was named after former US President Herbert Hoover.
Not only does the dam control the flow of water, but it also generates some 2080 megawatts of electricity via massive water turbines. A thoroughly interesting spot, the Dam is traversed by route 93, although plans are underway to divert the road to a safer location downstream.
Tours of the penstocks and generator rooms inside the dam are offered daily. Cost is $11.
