Built between 1931-35, the Hoover Dam (or Boulder Dam) was designed as part of an agreement to help assign water equally between Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico. The dam sits in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River just a few miles southwest of Las Vegas near Nevada's border with Arizona. It was named after former US President Herbert Hoover.

Not only does the dam control the flow of water, but it also generates some 2080 megawatts of electricity via massive water turbines. A thoroughly interesting spot, the Dam is traversed by route 93, although plans are underway to divert the road to a safer location downstream.

Hoover Dam and Lake Mead

Oh, so sad to be leaving the Grand Canyon... but it’s ok; we’re off to Las Vegas! Before we got to Vegas though, we stopped for a photo op at Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, the reservoir created behind the dam. Bordering the states of Arizona and Nevada, Hoover Dam was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1985.  This is an amazing structure and the scenery is spectacular.

For my second visit to my spiritual home of Las Vegas I gathered together a small crew of mates (none of whom knew each other) and off we went on a bit of a mad adventure to one of the greatest cities in the world. Full of activity 24/7 we had a riotous time living it up for a week or so, taking in the sights and trying to blend in with the insanity. A must see destination for absolutely everyone!

I went on a trip with my coworkers. I had never being canoeing and it was very scary but we got the hang out it and it was so enjoyable. We got to hike on the side of the river and check out some hot springs. Amazing!

I wanted to go on the Hoover Dam tour, but Tyler and Dawn were anxious to get to the Grand Canyon, so I was outvoted.  Not a big deal, but I was disappointed we couldn't even get into the visitor center unless we signed up for the tour.  The security is understandably much more heightened since I was here in '98, and we had to pull over and allow the truck to be searched prior to heading over the dam.  Tyler and I removed the cargo net and tarp off the bed of the truck, and ope...
