Kowloon Park
We had a free morning. Some of us visited Kowloon Park, a 33 acre area located in the middle of Tsim Sha Tsui. It is often called the "green lung of Kowloon." The beautiful oasis is built in classical Chinese style and there were plenty of scenic spots to for us to enjoy. They include Bird Lake, Bainiao Garden, a children's amusement park, a mini-sized football playground, a swimming pool and a gymn...

Although Typhoon Fengshen left Hong Kong yesterday, it still brought heavy
rain. Late in the afternoon, it stopped
raining, so it was time to move our asses.
We went to the nearby tiangges in Mong Kok District – Ladies Market, Sports Street and another street that
specializes on electronics and high-tech gadgets. Then, we moved to Yau Ma Tei for their Jade
Market and stopped at a wet market to check out their local produce. Then we saw some huge durian and immed...

Hong Kong was great! We docked at another container port. I guess our ship is on the large side so it doesn't fit into many of the docks in Asia. It was 9am but we couldn't get off until 10am. We had to be back by 4pm. Fortunatly we did not have to use tenders so we were able to walk right off the boat and get onto a shuttle into town. The ship actually docks at, and we were shuttled to an area called Tsim Sha Tsui which is across from Hong Kong Island.&nbs...

So, the three weeks in Hong Kong have come to an end. I came down with a bout of food poisoning towards the end of the trip, and was layed low for three days. (Dont let the food poisoning incident put you off. I ate a dodgy meal consisting of sauasage and mash. I feel the sausages were undercooked.) As a result some of the bigger plans we had for travelling round in the last few days didnt come off. However overall we saw a lot of what HK had to offer, and we certainly dined out in some fanta...

Another early start this morning, this time we had to make our way across the harbour to the Harbour-Plaza Hong Kong Hotel by 8:30am. This hotel is in a wonderful position right on the harbour. The pool was the best we saw with glass walls that allowed you to see the view from all angles. When you walk into the foyer, your eyes are immediately drawn to the floor to ceiling glass walls revealing the wonderful view of the harbour and across the water to Kowloon. After breakfast, we had a day of...

Time to leave HK.. Our flight leaves at 8 in the evening so we have the whole day to explore the city. One of the agenda is not to leave HK without going to Snoopy's World. Based on my friend's description, I thought it is a theme park, similar to Disneyland/Ocean Park. I had a difficult time looking for this in the internet. When we went there, we didn't know what to expect. After riding three different trains and getting lost, we arrived at the right station - but we...

Like I said... Hong Kong rocks. All we did today was spend time shopping and eating really good dim sum. It was at the Sheraton hotel, and it's cool because this resturaunt is ranked top ten out of all the dim sum places in the world. Let's see... went to Harbour City to go shopping in the really huge mall. Best shopping place in the city, so we got Christmas shopping taken care of. Hong Kong baby. Best place for shopping. My dad bought this really expensive Cartier watch, and I got my band f...

We left the hotel at about 10-11 to find Yumi somewhere cheaper to stay while she was in Macau, she was staying for a while before heading back across the border for China. Although Mandrin isn't the prominent language in Macau, Yumi seemed be able to use it when talking to the locals. All I could do was stand there and smile.
A little hungry we walked into a tiny local restaurant for a bowl of soup. The decor was tatty and the place looked a little run down but the soup was excellent and ce...

I woke up soo early today (around 5 I think) and couldn’t get back to sleep. So I left the hostel, headed towards the harbour again to catch sight of the sunrise. Again, I brought my tripod with me to take photos of HK island at dusk, and as well as of myself (I haven’t found the opportunity to pose and smile since it’s always packed!). It’s funny really, when I got on the harbour, I was probably the only tourist there. Locals come in the morning to do some Tai Chi exercise. Some jog,...

Regr...

Monday 20th March
Today I escaped Colditz/Beirut/Garden of Hell minus one watch (what can you expect?) and skipped merrily to my new hotel. The hotel was great; not a madman or locust in sight. After celebrating escaping the Garden of Hell by doing a victory lap around my bedroom, I went downstairs and met my group who were on the China Discovery trip. The group consisted of eight humans, seven from the UK and one Canadian. It was a pretty young group, which was good, so ...

So from Shanghai I got the overnight train to Hong Kong. Ok, it was 26
hours or something. Luckily there was another guy (Irish!) getting the
same train from the hostel I was staying in so we could share a taxi.
Then when we were on the train a Japanese girl that he had met on the
boat to Shanghai was staying in the same compartment as me! So we had
some good craic. Actually this train was the best train I'd been on in
China but then I guess it's more of an 'international' train. It jus...

After the zombie-like state that the festivities in Bangkok and a couple of hours sleep had given me, I was well pleased to negotiate a taxi, plane, train and bus journey followed by a half-hour walk to find accommodation and make it to Hong Kong in one piece. Soaring realty prices and a lack of floor space means that everything in Hong Kong pretty much gets built upwards before it gets built outwards. Quite peculiarly, most hostels are contained within a floor in one of the massive decaying...
