Homer is a charming town on the Kenai Peninsula. It is known within the state as a place where hippies tend to congregate, and where there is little work. It is famous for a few things, mostly the windy and distinctive "Homer Spit" that just out into the sea, the Salty Dawg Saloon, the fact that the singer Jewel grew up there and is not universally liked, and halibut fishing. Many people seem to end up there simply because "it was the end of the road." This gives a unique feel to the community. Many things seem to be perfectly fine in Homer, that would be scandalous in most other Alaskan towns.

Many people who move into the town end up settling pretty far from the center, for exemple "out East end road".

The Kachemak Bay shorebird festival (in spring) is a great time to come, as is a yearly writers' conference. Nancy Lord lives and writes there, and her book "survival" gives a good feel for the area and the people who live there.
