Flew into Anchorage from Atlanta. Northwest has always been the cheapest flight even last minute. There is the Homer Stage line that will take you from the Airport to anywhere on the Kenia peninsula. Yes even a mile marker. They make several stops on the way but it is interesting of who you meet.
The Kenia is a beutiful place with good hiking trails throughout. There is an abundance of wildlife. Make sure you have a bear bell on your pack and bear proof food containers. During the summer it is heavy traffic with retirees in RV's. Also during the salmon runs the rivers are packed. Homer itself is a quite diverse town. There is a Russian Orthodox community, a hippie commune, and now yuppies buying property and driving up property values. The town is growing. Night life is pub oriented and not geared for the tourist. Most tourist are here to fish and sight see. If you desire to fish then you are in the right spot for Halibut. This I do advise for everyone. Go out for ne day and if you catch a 50-80lb halibut you have fish for the year. There is a good stock of king and silver salmon also. They do offer a combo trip where you fish for both in the same day. The prices are about $250US. The weather is damp and cool so dress warmly. If you go on a boat bring some good layers of water proof jacket and pants. Lodging: is about $100-150/night for a cabin. There is a hostel just as you come into town. It is convient to most things except the spit. The spit is the marina. The is an old ass bar there called the Salty Dog (I think) and it is the lone survivor of a Tsunami that hit the area in the 60s or 70s. Strong drinks. Try the local brew it is delivered in recycled bottles like the days of old. You might be drinking out of an old Sobe bottle. The rest of the Kenia is rustic and great for hiking, kayaking, canoeing, and general nature watching. |

8.8.08 Homer
After booking the ferry yesterday while in Anchorage and high-fiving ourselves, we drove a gorgeous road to Homer! Incredibly beautiful!
And then, to make things even better, we are now parked in…attractive, but we want to see the fishing hole. Maybe this is the place to catch that fish for dinner!
Relaxing and enjoying Alaska ’s playground on the Kenai Peninsula !
p.s. We’ve driven over 9,000 miles so far!

Today we went fishing (again), but still no luck. Oh, well!
Our caravan friends invited us to their fish cook-off where they had fried halibut, many varieties of baked halibut, and grilled halibut. It was all very good and we we…didn’t see any animals. We did get to watch a movie about them and walk around and learn about how the population of birds was greatly effected in Alaska when foxes were introduced to the area by Russian fur traders who wanted to bred the foxes. … Buffet with Caravan friends |
