The Queen's residence in Edinburgh Jun 10, 2005
Holyrood Palace was originally founded as a monastery back in the early 1100s. In 1498 James IV turned it into a palace. It is the official residence of the Queen when she is in Edinburgh. Tours are allowed when the Queen is not in residence, but photos may not be taken inside. Only a small portion is actually on the tour, those with historic importance and those used for state functions. The Abbey is now in ruins due to the stone roof collapsing during a hurricane but its 800 year history included many special events at the palace. This is a wonderful tour and although not all inclusive it shows many wonderful areas and items.

…a free sample of the new Red Bull Cola (disgusting, to be honest…way too sweet for my taste) and then did a quick walk by the Palace of Holyroodhouse and the new Scottish Parliament building. Um…ok.
True tourist time…the walk up the Royal Mile. Nice street, all the typical tourist shops, restaurants, and some nice old buildings. All along the lower part of the Mile… Scottish Meanderings |

I visited the Edinburgh Castle, the Palace of Holyroodhouse (which seemed like it´d be super dreary to live in but had so much fascinating history, including all the Mary Queen of Scots stuff), a couple random places like John Knox´s house and the Scottish Parliament building, and took a full… Haggis and Hostels |
