Holiday Inn Akron-West Reviews
Standard Holiday Inn Aug 09, 2009
We stayed at the Holiday Inn in Akron, Ohio for just one night during our road trip to Chicago mostly because of the price and the close proximity and free tickets to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.
The lobby is very large with a restaurant just to the right as you walk in. The reception counter is very basic, and the one young man working the counter was very friendly and helpful, well, as much as he could be for being there by himself.
When we checked in, we asked about a roll away bed, which we also had requested when we made the reservations about a month ago. He said since he was the only one there, he could not leave the desk and we would have to wait until his shift ended and the next employee arrived for him to bring up the extra bed. That was fine, I understood. Then we asked about the free tickets to the Pro Football Hall of Fame we were told we would get for staying here. He was unable to locate any tickets put aside for us and was not sure on the process of getting them. He told us we would have to ask the staff in the morning about the tickets. OK, that we can do, but there better be some free tickets for us as promised when we made these reservations!
We went up to the room, which was nice, but this is a Holiday Inn, so the rooms are very basic, a bathroom, two beds, a small round table and two chairs in the corner, and a TV. The room was clean and in very good condition with a good working air conditioner which ran quietly. Of course like most hotels, the water pressure in the shower was weak, but not bad. They also had an outdoor pool, which looked nice, but didn't take advantage of while we were there. There was also free HBO, so Lena didn't miss watching True Blood!
We decided to run out to the local Out Back Steakhouse for dinner and bring it back to the room. The guy at the check in desk gave me good directions, and it was easy to find just a mile up the road. Around 10:00pm, I called down and asked about the rollaway bed. Again I was told as soon as his relief came in, he would go to housekeeping and bring up a bed for us. I was hoping this would be soon, as we were all getting sleepy, but the next shift started at 11:00pm, so we would have to wait another hour. Right at 11:00pm, the roll away bed arrived and we were soon fast asleep.
In the morning, before we checked out, we had breakfast at the restaurant just off the lobby. The waitress was very friendly and helpful, and even suggested we not order sides for those that did not eat from the breakfast bar, since the same things were at the bar and we could just get some from there. The food was good and the selection was very nice.
All in all, this was a nice place to stay the night. It served its purpose and we all slept very well. We did get our free tickets for the Pro Football Hall of Fame the next morning, but only two. The other two we had to pay for, but we did get a discount on those since we were told when we made the reservations over the phone we would get four. They will only give two for free per room. Guess that keeps people from putting a bunch of people in one room and getting a bunch of free tickets. The staff in the morning was very nice and helpful. The young man working the night before obviously needed another person with him since he seemed to be overwhelmed by our simple request. If we are passing through Akron, Ohio again someday, we may stay here, unless we can find a better rate somewhere else.
