Holiday Gold Hotel Hanoi Reviews
a blast! Mar 16, 2011
Fantastic stay over christmas 2010. Super friendly staff prepared lovely christmas surprises for all guests - wine, chocolate...(no charge); organized sapa tour and halong bay for very little money and picked me up/dropped me off at train station without any delay. Good downtown location and very spacious, clean rooms. Anytime again.

We booked a room at the Holiday Hotel Hanoi as it was part of the same chain of hotels we stayed at in Hue, which had been exceptional.
We were collected from the train station and taken to the hotel where we were given an 'upgrade' room to use until our one was ready.
It seemed like by letting us settle into the better (more expensive) room they thought maybe we'd find it inconvenient to move and would just pay the extra to avoid moving.
Needless to say it was a nice gesture, but the cheaper standard room was much nicer than the deluxe, so we took that instead. One thing was instantly clear though, the Hanoi hotel was of a significantly lower quality than the one in Hue.
The lighting in the room was dim making the room seem dirty, the decor was old and the air conditioning did not work initially. The room was very noisy, but I think this was mostly due to the political announcements inflicted on the city than the location, although there were some extremely noisy vendors setting up shop very early in the morning, everyday.
The bed was comfortable and the bathroom had a good hot shower. The toilet had a habit of gurgling - air in the pipes meant that we often had large bubbles coming out of the toilet, which proved very untimely with one bad stomach incident.
The reception staff were helpful and booked our bus tickets to China and our Halong Bay trip. We felt we were given a reasonable price for both (but had to haggle of course).
However, when ordering food, there were major miscommunications - even pointing at the Vietnamese words on the menu didn't prevent us getting the wrong things. Even when the dishes did come, they were of a poor standard. Avoid room service! The included breakfast was freshly cooked and tasty though.
I think for the price we paid for our room, there are many better options in Hanoi.
