Pretty gate near the traffic! Feb 16, 2011
Holi gate can be found on the outskirts of central Mathura and is quite an introduction to the town. Carved out of sandstone, the gate to Mathura is very ornately finished. It dates from the medieval period approximately but could be slightly older.

Although it is a lovely historic and artistic feature within Mathura, it is seldom visited or appreciated by the locals or tourists that come here. Instead it is more of a reference point if you are going somewhere via rickshaw. This is a pity, as the area is constantly flooded with huge streams of people and traffic. The pollution must be damaging the structure. If it was any other country, I’m sure the gate would be more protected and appreciated!

If you are in Mathura and are staying in a nice hotel, chances are you will be located around here or drive past here for sure. Take a quick look before you whiz past!
