Hole in the Wall Transkei Reviews
Basic facility, Beautiful scenery Dec 22, 2009
In December of 2009 we decided to go where we've never been before... The Wild Coast, formally known as the Transkei.
After a few recommendations from family and friends, we decided to book at the Hole in the Wall Hotel. Their prices were average, and we heard some great things from previous guests. Our main requirement was for it to be clean, and as close to the beach as possible. I have to admit, being called a hotel, our expectations were much higher and we were not at all prepared for what we let ourselves into. Again, this was also a self catering facility with a bar and restaurant on the premises. When we made the booking we had the understanding that breakfast was included, and the self-catering part was a different section of the hotel. Needless to say, we took nothing, only some beverages, but to be honest, we had close to nothing else...
After driving over 14 hours (we thought it would take about 8, but the roads were horrible, lost of potholes 80km before our destination), we arrived when it was already dark. The receptionist was very helpful and organised our keys and a late dinner.
The chalet was very basic, but clean. The cutlery, crockery and utensils were basic, but in a good condition. We had 2 rooms, 2 bathrooms and a huge living area, as well as braai (bbq) facilities on the veranda. The rooms were serviced every day and the cleaners were very friendly and trustworthy.
After we realised NO meals were included, and we brought nothing with us, it was time for shopping. The whole in the wall is quite secluded, but there is a small town (Coffee Bay) not too far. Opposite the hotel there was a small general dealer who sold almost everything you’ll need. We paid him a visit, he had fresh fruit & vegetables, good meat and all the basics you’ll need for cleaning. The shop was not expensive at all.
The hotel has a swimming pool (not very clean, actually green most of the time), its close to the beach, average bar & restaurant and lots of safe places for children to play. What makes this such a great place is the stunning scenery, beautiful beaches and lots of activities. Perfect for hiking, fishing, horseback riding, cultural tours and much more. Everyone should take a boat trip to look at the Hole in the Wall from the ocean.
Will I go back or recommend this place? YES. But next time I’ll be more prepared. A 4x4 is also not a waste, we really struggled with normal 4x2 cars, the roads were really terrible.
