hiyoshi taisha shrine Nov 04, 2008
Hiyoshi Taisha shrine is located in Sakamoto a suburb of Otsu in Shiga prefecture, beside Lake Biwa, north of Kyoto.

Hiyoshi Taisha enshrines Sanno Gongen, the guardian deity of Mount Hiei. During the late Heian period Hiyoshi Taisha had very close links with powerful Enryaku ji temple on Mount Hiei. The monks on the way to protest to the emperor used to stop here and get a mikoshi. A mikoshi is a portable shrine in which the shrine deity could travel from place to place and no one would dare attack the monks while accompanied it.

This is one of the most popular and famous shrines in Otsu. It is especially famous for its Autumn leaves and is one of the first places the people of Otsu visit in the New Years.

This was the second time for me to come here, once for New Years when my son was a baby and then last week end for 7, 5,3 festival.
