Hitchins Vacation Guide

Hitchins, KY is very small, and poor, rural town located in Carter County, where KY State highways 1 and 773 converge. It’s population as of the 2000 census was 618. In 1990 it was over 3000, but the closing of the General Refractories brick plant, took a drastic toll. The brick plant was the industry in the area. The plant opened in 1912, and in 1913 the town of Hitchins was born, when the existing town of Anglin changed it’s name to honor the Hitchins family who both built and ran the factory in the early days.

Today there is little to cause you to stop in Hitchins. There is no industry, no attractions, no shopping, in short nothing to cause you to pull over unless you have family ties to the area. The nearby county seat, Grayson, is the nearest town of any size.
