Hitchin Vacation Guide
Hitchin, is a historic market town based in north Hertfordshire, 52km (36 miles) north of the centre of London. Hitchin is actually noted in the Doomsday Book, way back in 1086 and therefore is one of the oldest towns in England.
Hitchin hosts a lot of bars and public houses because during the Victorian times, a lot of horse and carts taking deliveries to and from London to the North of the country stopped at Hitchin to have a drink or stay the night. Hence a lot of wide streets in the town with public houses running along side them.
The main market square has cobbled roads and the main Corn Exchange is based here.
Hitchin is a very quiet town and mutli-cultral as well. Despite this, Hitchin is a very safe town to walk around, and the people are generally helpful and friendly.
To get to Hitchin is easy, based on the A1 (main road from London to Scotland) and is easily reached by train, which the train station is a 15 minute walk just north of the town.
Main attraction is when the fun fair comes to town and is based on the park outside the town's football club. Also walking around Oughtonhead Common is popular during the summer and the public houses in nearby Ickleford, St Ippolyts, Wymondley's and Gosmore are fantastic on a nice sunny Sunday afternoon as they serve great tradtional Sunday Roast dinners which is worth checking out.
Also in July, Hitchin hosts the annual 'Rhythem's of the World' music event, which is popular with young people.
