Barendorf's Historical Machine Plant Jul 31, 2010
At the northpart of the town of Iserlohn, in the village Barendorf, you can find the Historische Fabrikanlage Maste-Barendorf, a heritage village on a.o. needle production in the 19th century.

The fundation for these plants was laid in 1822. The little stream, the Baarbach, made it possible to supply the power needed to run the factories. The first half of the century showed a big expansion in plants specialized in various products of different kind of metals.

This caused the town of Iserlohn became a leader in needle production, of which a lot is shown in the needle museum.

There also is the brass foundry (Gelbgiesserei), unfortunately it only runs 5 times a year, and this was not one of those days. However, the man of the museum village opened the building for us so we could look around at all the equipment, and pictures of the staff at the late 19th century.

I expected a bit more information about all the buildings, the power supply, the machinery, it was a bit poor on that. F.e. the needle museum was open but there was no-one of the staff around to answer possible questions.

And the man at the brass foundry was not too generous on information either, however if you had a question (you had to put these in German) he answered it.

But the setting was picturesque, no doubt about that, and it was a free admission.

So my conclusion is if you are interested in historical things it might be a good place for a picknick with like-minded people, however if you came here to learn about industry in the past I would classify it as a poor teacher.

It was a nice place though, but not what I had expected of a museum village. Luckily I had my husband with me :) - he knows a bit of metalworks for he works at an all-round machineplant.

That's unusual, because normally the staff at these places are full of enthusiasm and keen to explain! I find old plant and machinery quite fascinating.
