Historic border town Aug 13, 2010
Castelo de Vide is in Portugal near to the Spanish border. It is reached by bus from Portalegre. As you might expect from a hilltop town in this area, there is a wonderful historical atmosphere.

I am concentrating on two buildings from different periods. The first is the castle itself. It was rebuilt in 1310 and one assumes had a busy existence in battles between Christians and Moors and between Spain and Portugal. It was reduced to its present condition (more or less) at the beginning of the 18th century when gunpowder hidden from the Spanish exploded! It is free to go in. The view stretches to Marv√£o, which could be reached by a ridge walk with a bus back from there to Portalegre, making a fine circular trip.

The other building is the former synagogue. This dates from an influx of Jews when they were expelled from Spain in 1492. You don't have to be Jewish to get interest from it but a certain interest in history is necessary because it looks very like neighbouring houses.

Some churches in the town are very old as well.
