Historic Decatur ~ shops, pubs, restaurants, & history around the Square Oct 22, 2010
Decatur, Georgia is a delightful place to while away a day or night. The touristy part is situated around the Historic Courtyard Square and the corners of Church St. and Ponce de Leon. This small area packs in an amazing number and variety of restaurants and shops and is easily accessed from Atlanta by a quick MARTA ride.
Some of the hot restaurants are Leon's - a new place serving California style cuisine on the corner of Ponce & Church. http://www.leonsfullservice.com/
The same owners of Leon's own The Brick Store Pub, a Decatur tradition in a quaint, brick lined Pub right across from the Courthouse. Their beer selection is the most extensive in town and their food is pretty good for pub food. The atmosphere - both indoors & at their outside seating - is awesome. http://www.brickstorepub.com/
Another cool spot is The Chocolate Bar. A romantic & elegant spot for an after dinner treat. As the name suggests, this Bar specializes in specialty chocolate including chocolate martinis, handmade truffles, desserts, and a wide array of cheeses and snacks. Open only in the evenings, it's a decadent and wholly satisfactory stop while exploring the town. http://www.thechocolatebardecatur.com/
To list all the restaurants Decatur has to offer, just on the Square, is impossible, but two other deserve a mention.
Cafe Alsace is an award winning French Cafe on Ponce - a small, quaint & casual Cafe that looks straight off the streets of Alsace. http://www.cafealsace.net/
Noodles, a local chain serving Asian food, is an excellent place to get a variety of Asian style foods. Fairly Americanized, it still satisfies the palate of someone who lived in Asia for 10 years. If you can't get the real thing in Ho Chi Minh City, Shanghai, or Bangkok, try Noodles. Outside pet friendly dining also. http://www.noodlehouse.net/
For shopping, there is a wide array of places where you can easily part with your money.
Boutique Karma on Church just to the right of the MARTA Station has unique women's clothing, many brands imported from India.
Blue Moon Designs is an eclectic home & garden store situated in a quaint, old home. They have a lovely rocker on the front porch where non shoppers can comfortably wait, cats wondering around the garden, and a great masseuse available by appointment on the top floor of the house.
Got Cigars has, guess what? Cigars. On Ponce.
Taste on Church offers loads of kitchen gadgets and tea. You can also find Georgia specific gifts, like roasted pecans, peach jellies and the like.
Mingei World Arts right across from Blue Moon has a fantastic selection of Asian art - so if you didn't buy it when you saw it in China or Thailand or Vietnam, you can get it here. At triple the price!
Now for you serious travelers, there is tons of history to experience also. Decatur dates back to the early 1800s and was built at the crossroads of two Native American trading routes. As a town, it predates Atlanta, though was subsequently eclipsed by Atlanta's growth.
Decatur was also a strategic location during the Civil War for both the Union and Confederate troops and was visited by McPherson and Sherman. It was also the scene of a skirmish during the Atlanta Battle of 1864.
Decatur is home to Agnes Scott College, a beautiful women's school off Candler Road and a few blocks away from the Square. The town teems with college students and professors throughout the year.
There are beautiful neighborhoods surrounding the Square, with old houses, many listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It's a walkable town with fully developed foliage, giant magnolias, and flowering dogwoods in the Spring.
A great place to live and a great place to visit, it's definitely worth a stop while you're in Atlanta.
