Himeji Castle Reviews
One of Japan's most beautiful castles Jul 21, 2000
Himeji Castle was one of the (many) places that I wanted to see during my 2000 Japan trip. I did and I got to visit the castle again in 2007.
Himeji Castle is on the Unesco Heritage list and despite wars, earthquakes and fires, it's still in its original state. It was originally build as a fort in 1333, but then rebuild in 1346 as Himeyama Castle and from 1581 until 1618, the castle underwent several expansions until it's present shape. On both visits I was with a tour group.
The first time in 2000 we got a guided tour through the castle. The tourguide was full of knowledge about the castle. She told us information about why the castle and certain features were constructed, several secret passage ways and optical illusions to trick people who attacked the castle. She also showed us the location where some of the scenes of the James Bond movie 'You Only Live Twice' was recorded.
In 2007, my second time to visit the castle, we went on our own. I sort of rushed through the castle, as I wanted to visit the nearby Koko-en Garden with more time then I had the previous time in 2000.
The entrance ticket on both times costed me 600 yen (around 5,50 euros or 7,50 US dollars). It's definitely worth going there for a few hours and see one of Japans most beautiful castles!
*Note: until march 2015, the main building of the castle is covered by scafolds for a major renovation. Entrance price is therefor 400 yen (around 3,50 euro or around 5 US dollars).
