Average big hotel experience Jan 10, 2015
The Hilton Union Square, San Francisco comprises 4 large towers connected to a central lobby and convention centre. The hotel occupies most of a city block. With over 500 rooms, the hotel’s main market seems to be large conventions and business travellers.

Having spent 6 weeks there in 2014, I found is a lot to like about the SFO Hilton: The upper floor rooms in Tower 4 facing the bay have balconies with great views both day and night (see pictures); the rooms and desks are a good size; It is close to Union Square and China Town. The pool area is clean and gets good sun throughout the day.

On the other hand, there are things which could be better and it can seem like there is an arm-wrestle going on between staff trained in the Hilton tradition and the cost accountants. Mostly the Hilton staff prevail but there are some battles in which the staff cannot overcome the size of the property and challenges created by its management: It looks like the lobby and arrival desks would have been able to handle arrivals and departures when the hotel had two towers. With two newer towers connected to the lobby, there are often long waits to check in or out. Somehow the staff cope but the lobby is too crowded and hectic to meet with colleagues or friends. The gym is overwhelmed between about 6 and 9.30 in the morning; There can also be long queues to get a table for breakfast because the restaurant and single Starbucks outlet are too small for the number of guests. Despite the size and location of the property, there is no executive lounge for Diamond Members.

For all this, the staff do what they can to help. When I asked for a phone on the desk, a serviceman was in my room within a few minutes. He mentioned that a lot of guests asked for a phone on the desk but that management had decided that there was only to be one phone per room to save costs. Neither of us could figure out why the single bedside phone did not have an extension cord that could reach the desk. Still, it was difficult to be frustrated when issues are addressed with good will and a sense of humour. Similarly, the staff in the restaurant and bar are unfailingly friendly, despite being so outnumbered.

Overall, I enjoyed my time at the Hilton Union Square, but the property is not one of the better examples of Hilton hospitality.

I got a good deal on this Hotel Jun 14, 2011
I've had the same luck with this Hilton two times. On Prieline's 'Name your own price' these guys have accepted my offer of $88/Night. Not bad if you consider that it's right in the middle of everything! Close to shopping/Union Square, etc...

Above the Average among the Hiltons Apr 04, 2011
I have stayed in many Hilton hotels around the world. Because I stayed one day only, don't consider my review as the critical factor, but anyway it's over the average for a Hilton. (My favorite Hilton was in Otawwa)

I recommend it but pls take care of the rates before go.

Average priced hotel in San Francisco near Union Square! Jul 13, 2007
Hilton San Francisco is an average priced hotel located a stone throw away from Union Square and trolley stations, shopping area, walking distance to San Francisco's Chinatown, and great restaurants.

My sister, brother and I stayed in a 2 full-bed room for 3 nights + plus flight with United Airlines for $425 per person.

The hotel lobby is luxurious and well-staffed.

This is a big and busy hotel that caters to business functions and tourists alike.

Our room was average size, a bit cramped for 3 people but with great, soft and comfortable beds. The bathroom was clean with towels and toiletries provided.

There are several great restaurants located within a 3 block radius.
