Suburbian DC Hilton Chain Hotel with Houlihan's Restaurant Bar and Free Parking Jul 10, 2011
The Springfield Hilton is a quick 5-minute ride by free hotel shuttle or 50¢ TAGS bus to the Franconia-Springfield Metro, terminus of the Blue line. The Springfield Mall with a Target store is right across the street, but the mall is mostly empty and appears to be closing soon. The Springfield Hilton has plenty of free parking with a “pass” from the front desk due to the proximity of the Metro Station which has a big parking garage, but you must have a monthly pass to use the Metro garage. The Hilton Old Town Alexandria charges to park your car in their garage, so Springfield Hilton is better if you are driving a rental car or your own personal vehicle which requires parking. We spent the entire week of business and vacation at the Hilton Old Town Alexandria location without a rental car and never really missed that expense (or the parking) but the Springfield Hilton is in a spread out area and you may need a vehicle to get around.

We had stayed at the Springfield Hilton in July 2011. I paid the $210 government summer per diem rate for the first four nights and then paid about $132 per night to stay through the weekend to get Hilton Honors points for our next stay in the DC area. Others in our business group stayed at Hilton Old Town Alexandria for the same price and were closer to King Street Metro station on the Blue and Yellow lines, along with more nearby restaurants than Springfield Hilton.

Springfield Hilton has a Houlihan’s upscale chain restaurant and bar inside the hotel, which has a great menu selection and even carries Ruffino Chianti Classico and Chianti from Tuscany, Italy. I also attended the Manager’s Welcome night and received free breakfast buffet daily, unlike the Hilton Old Town Alexandria which did not include breakfast or have a Manager’s Welcome reception.

The rooms were very clean and the room even had a refrigerator, but no microwave. The big flat screen TVs and Wi-Fi ($ cost?) was a big plus, the bathrooms were a bit small compared to other Hilton chain hotels we've stayed at in the DC area. Although the service at the front desk was exceptional, Jenny felt uncomfortable with the security situation at night when using the business center and there were male employees “resting” in the business center at night waiting to go on shift. We complained to the hotel management and they said this was not the first time they have had to tell the employees not to “hang out” in the business center at night.

We got re-keyed quickly when we changed room rates and the business center was free which was different than the Hilton Old Town Alexandria which was quite expensive to use the business center by the minute. The hotel staff was friendly and we even talked to the Ukrainian lifeguard at the indoor pool and used the fitness center a few times.

Overall, I'm glad we chose to stay at Springfield Hilton since we had a rental car with free parking for this trip to the DC area but we will probably stay at Hilton Old Town Alexandria for business and pleasure from now on since Old Town is closer to downtown DC and has more options for nearby meals. If you want to stay in the suburbs of DC in the Springfield area, Hilton Hotel Springfield is the place to stay!
