Edinburgh Hotel Near Haymarket Sep 22, 2012
I stayed at this hotel for 10 days while attending a meeting in Edinburgh. First things first and I arrived early in the morning and my room was not ready. The current occupants had not checked out yet. This was understandable, but I was also told once they did it could take an hour or more to clean the room because it was a suite, but they would try to give it priority. I was expecting some friends on a flight following mine and they arrived a couple hours later. Their room was not ready either and were told the same story. My friend made a fuss about breakfast and he had been told it was included with the room when he called ahead after booking. The man at reception relented and agreed to include the breakfast at no charge. Seizing the opportunity, I said that I wanted that too, and it was given to me as well. We had breakfast, which is a decent buffet style with plenty of offerings to satisfy. Eggs and omelets can be cooked to your preference if you ask. Anyway, more waiting after breakfast and I won't pick on the hotel too much for this, perhaps did the best they could. We did arrive quite early and the hotel was very full. I can overlook this and its understandable maybe.

The hotel Grosvenor is rather old as an establishment there I gather, dating back to the 1930's perhaps and maybe older. The building itself dates to around circa 1860's so it wasn't originally a hotel, but converted to one later. Nevertheless, the interior is modern, perhaps 1990's style interior and relatively clean. The room I had was called a Jr. Suite and consisted of a spacious bedroom with widescreen TV and decent sized desk. An accessory room, or rather more a lounge area consisted of a sofa with another widescreen TV (larger than in the bedroom) mounted on the wall. Plenty of closet and drawer space available and a good bathroom too. The room only has wall mounted space heaters, and I was skeptical they would keep the room warm on a chilly night, but they did the trick. Not toasty warm, mind you, but enough so I didn't feel cold. I was told there is a charge for wifi, but the free access code for the lobby works in the rooms too. No free bottled water though and no mini-bar available either.

I have some complaints about the staff here. It's an odd mix of people and ones in the bar and restaurant area are the most friendly and helpful. I give them all high marks for providing consistently good service and friendly demeanor. Reception on the other hand was hit and miss. I asked for the loan of a power converter and was told someone would bring it up. I had to go down and get it eventually as nobody delivered it. Another time I asked about currency exchange. They would do that for a commission, but were entirely ignorant on other options except to try a bank or post office. In asking questions about rates in Scotland I got the 'shrugging shoulders' response. They didn't seem very knowledgeable about restaurants either and overheard a conversation or two by other guests that the places the hotel recommended were not that good.

Well, I have mixed feelings about this hotel. It's not bad, but feel it could do better, especially regarding reception. They just seemed not all that well informed and lacking some enthusiasm for service that I found a bit annoying. With that said, they redeemed themselves a bit by helping us arrange a Highlands tour later. In this regard they were quite helpful. All in all, it may depend on your preference and criteria, but I generally expect better service than I got here in a hotel that carries the Hilton name. This is in regard mostly to the reception staff. I don't like to use the word lazy, but that was my impression - maybe lacking enthusiasm describes the situation better.

I had a comfortable and pleasant stay otherwise. The lounge is especially nice to watch TV and have a pint or two at very reasonable prices. The hotel is located near Haymarket train station, which is convenient, and there are banks, a post office, convenience store, pharmacy, restaurants and pubs nearby with only one or two minutes walk. It's a bit away from the city center (a small issue with location perhaps), but even then only 15-20 minutes by foot, or quicker by Haymarket station to Waverley (only one stop) and you are right in the center of things.

Hilton Grosvenor Edinburgh Nov 13, 2009
I'll have to agree with David that the Hilton service here is not at all resemble worldwide hilton standards, however the service you get here is probably on the good side of what you'll get at other hiltons in the UK. There were some pretty terrible and mediocre level of service here. It's not bad service, it's more like a holiday inn attitude rather than an expected hilton attitude that you get from the staff. To me the majority of the staff just feels 'lazy' and doesnt really love their job. All in all, i enjoyed staying here. There are 2 buildings for this hotel, the Hilton building and the grosvenor biulding across the street, all belongning to the hotel and combine to 180+ rooms. The grosvenor is alot more run down and old thus a cheaper rate. The Hilton side is more up to date with modern decor and renovations. The rooms are nice and clean and offer and classy modern look. They're spacious and comfortable. The lobby and lounge also boast a great feel and atmosphere. The restaurant looks fantastic with the same new age touch in interior design but the food is lacking a bit. First night i had the chef recommended Pollack with capers sauce, although the fish was near perfeclty grilled, the sauce ruined it for me. The way they made the capers and cream sauce was not a good combination for the taste buds. It added a bitter and almost starchy taste to otherwise good fish. The next night i had the 8oz sirloin, what a steak. poor quality meat with horrible cooking technique. It seemed to be microwaved and then thrown on the grill for 10 seconds to put some marks on the outside. It was bland, dry, and unfresh. Then along came the desert sorbet, although i'd say it was more a ball of shaved ice than sorbet icecream, it seems the kitchen staff let it sit in the freezer for a few months over the expiry date and crystalized. Comfortable stay, but stay away from the food here. It's also not 'prime' location on the strip of downtown edinburgh, but its within a 20 min walking distance, not so bad.
