Perfect for those visiting Washington DC. May 31, 2012
We stayed here when we visited Washington DC. What's great about this hotel is that it's not actually in the business or center area of Washington, BUT the train that takes you right into the city is a 1 minute walk from the hotel. It'll take 10-15 min and you're in Washington. By the way .... their trains are much nicer and cleaner than our in NYC.

This hotel is cheaper than your average hotel in the center and it's a much safer area to be at night than if you were to stay IN Washington.

There are many small shops and restaurants near the hotel. A few hang out areas, gift shops, etc. You'll note people hanging out in the evening.

It's a good place to rest at after a long day of sightseeing in Washington DC.

From what I remember, the bed and rooms were all nice. Some people suggest however to make sure your room is not facing the train station at a low floor. Some could find it a bit aggravating.

4-Star Hotel adjacent to King Street Metro Dec 04, 2011
The Hilton Old Town Alexandria is the perfect location to stay in the DC area, adjacent to the King Street Metro on the Blue and Yellow lines. Although they do have a parking garage, we did not use it this time and took the Metro train from Washington Reagan National Airport (DCA) directly to the stop across the street from the hotel. We spent the entire week of business and vacation without a rental car and never really missed that expense (or the parking)!

We had stayed at the Hilton Old Town Alexandria in July 2003 during our move to Japan, but our December 2011 visit was also memorable for us. We paid the $183 government per diem rate for the first four nights, used Hilton Honors for a "free night" (34,000 points) and then paid only $112 for the last two weekend nights including tax! What a bargain for a 4-star hotel at a great location!

Although the hotel is right across the street from the King Street Metro and the Amtrak Union Station Alexandria which also has Virginia Railway Express (VRE) and CSX freight train traffic, the rooms are sound-proofed so you don't hear the trains at all. Within walking distance are several good restaurants if you don't want to eat at the hotel's famous Seagar's Restaurant. Joe Theismann's is right across the street and there is Casablanca Moroccan Restaurant with belly dancers right down King Street. Also within walking distance is Hard Times Cafe for world famous Chili. there is also a free trolley bus at King Street Metro to take you all the way down King Street to the Potomac River waterfront and Torpedo Factory Art Center with numerous restaurants, bars, pubs and historic sites along the way.

The rooms were very clean and the room even had a refrigerator, but no microwave. The big flat screen TVs and Wi-Fi ($ cost?) was a big plus--although we thought the beds were a bit "small" feeling when you "rolled toward the center" which probably means the beds are due for replacement soon.

The bathrooms were big compared to other Hilton chain hotels we've stayed at in the DC area. Service at the front desk was exceptional! We got re-keyed quickly when we changed room rates and the business center allows for free printing of your boarding passes, although hourly/minute rate usage of the business center has a steep cost $$$ at this location. We needed to send a box to our house on our last night for things that wouldn't fit in our luggage and the night staff gave us a copier paper box and the FedEx forms to ship it on our room charge!

The full bar has a great selection including one of my favorite beers, Pilsner Urquell, as well as several selections of Port Wine. Drinks are expensive but they also have good bar food including a nice selection of French cheeses on the cheese plate.

The hotel staff was friendly, even though the cleaning staff did not know much English and conducted business in Spanish for the most part.

We don't drink coffee, but there is a Starbucks Coffee right in the lobby of the hotel.

Overall, I'm glad we chose to stay at Hilton Old Town Alexandria for business and pleasure--especially since we could pass on the rental car and still stay at such a nice place right in the heart of Old Town Alexandria!
