Hillsboro Overview

Hillsboro is a quaint and quiet little town of about 124 located along New Mexico Highway 152 in Sierra County in southwest New Mexico. Hillsboro is about 61% male and has a median age of 56. It is located about 16 miles west of Interstate 25. Hillsboro was established in 1877 as "Hillsborough" after gold was discovered nearby. The first home was built here in August 1877 by two miners Dan Dugan and Dave Stitzel. Both gold and silver were found here so by 1880 there were 400 miners and four companies of soldiers in Hillsboro. The town was the county seat of Sierra County from 1884 to 1936 when the county seat was moved to Hot Springs which is better known as Truth or Consequences. A county courthouse was built here in 1892. By 1907, the population of Hillsboro rose to over 1200. Over 6 million dollars’ worth of ore was processed here by 1904. Between 1911 and 1931 836 tons of gold ore, 5470 tons of gold-copper-silver ore, and 200 tons of copper ore was produced in Hillsboro. There was a devastating flood here in 1914. The 1986 film "Lewis & Clark & George" starring Rose McGowan was filmed here. There are 10 individual locations in Hillsboro listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
