Hiking along the Rhine-River Oct 23, 2012
If you want to go on a little hiking trip in germany, you shouldnt miss the area around Rüdesheim and all the parts of the rhine river from Wiesbaden over Rüdesheim to Cologne. Rüdesheim is probably the most beautiful part of this area and all the way along the river is surrounded by vineyards. There are hiking trails everywhere on the hills which provide some amazing views over the colorful vineyards, the rhine and all the castles in the hills. There are more than 20 castles along the river between Koblenz and Rüdesheim.

Also the little citycores of Rüdesheim or Assmannshausen are worth a visit, with all of its traditional houses and so on. Dont miss the little "Drosselgasse" in Rüdesheim, which is pretty popular. Nearby you'll find the cable car going up on a hill, where you can see the Germania or so called Niederwald Denkmal (Niederwald Monument). From there its a good point to start your hike in the direction of Assmannshausen.

The coolest thing on your way will not only be the great views, but also the little Wine-"Stops" along the way, where you should have a little break. Those are little stations without personnel where you can get bottles of wine and a glas for everyone. It works like that: You use your ID-Card to open the locked door of that house (to check if you're adult), then theres a price-list for the wine and different bottles. You just take the one you like and leave the money there in a little box. You can also take the wineglas as a souvenir if you leave another 1,50€. The bottles are at about 7,50€, which is okay. The wine is from that region for sure and tastes great.

You can do any kind of hike there, just a short one would be from Rüdesheim to Assmannshausen, which is approx. 7km. If thats not enough, just go on - the hiking trails wont end :)

Its not far from Frankfurt, Wiesbaden or Cologne and you can take a cheap train (VIA) to go there. From Frankfurt it takes about 1 hour and you can take a group-ticket for 5 persons which costs 30€ and takes you there and back.
So beautiful...love the colors

WOW, wish I had known about this in 2010 when I was near Stuttgart for 7 weeks with nothing to do on the weekend!
