Zion National Park in southwestern Utah is certainly one of the more famous stops along the Grand Circle. Our group of five made the tour in August of 2007 traveling in a 31 foot Winnebago Chalet, or RMFC.

We rented from the Moturis folks in Las Vegas and due to the gargantuan size of the unit and the presence of Junior and Grandma we will hereafter refer to the traveling beast as Motorsaurus, instead of the Rolling Chalet. The trip to Zion from Green River along Utah Route 12 was adventure enough for it's own blog, but let's talk Zion.

Entering the park from the east found Motorsaurus needing an escort (not that kind) to pass through the tunnels blasted through the Zion mountains in the early 1900's. They stopped opposing traffic so our 12 foot height could drive down the center and not bang off the sides of the tunnel.

The primary feature of the park is a dramatic gorge carved in Navajo Sandstone by the Virgin River flexing it's erosive power through the eons. (dissenting Creationists can take it up with the Zion geologists). The park road travels north to its termination where a paved trail follows the river for another mile until the Virgin River Gorge turns into a slot canyon.

Where the paved trail ends is where the fun begins.

The Zion Narrows trail enters the river and continues north for 17 miles.(we didn't hike the whole way) Do not be in the Narrows during flash flood! Some hikers had rented walking sticks and neoprene booties, but that is unnecessary if you just look for a sturdy walking stick before you descend into the river. Do wear shoes, and do carry a walking stick.

For refreshing coolness on a blistering hot day and spectacular scenery, the Zion Narrows Trail is highly recommended.
