Extinct volcano next to Arenal is scenic/challenging climb. Mar 29, 2011
The hostel owner recommended we take the time to climb this extinct volcano, as you can then climb into it and go swimming inside. What met us was a challenging and thrilling climb with no clear path available at certain times. You must be somewhat fit to make it through this in one piece. On a hot and humid day, make sure to come fully prepared with plenty of water (a snack or two won't hurt either). Once you reach the top you can truly appreciate the beauty of what you just had to endure. Climbing down into the volcano to reach the water and then climbing back out is by no means a simple feat. A few times I found myself hanging onto branches or holding onto roots as I slid through mud or down rocks. Climbing out was only harder. Once you finally reach the water you realize it's not the best place to go swimming and watch out for the blood thirsty mosquitoes. The grueling climb into and back out of the volcano was absolutely worth the sweat and dirt that covers you; and a few drops of blood as well :)

A nice and scenic hike. Sep 03, 2008
This was a relatively easy hike. We parked at the entrance gate and started off. One thing to think about is following along behind an organized tour for a part of the hike. I did this and learned a lot about the volcano as well as the plants and animals that inhabit the area.

During the hike you have to cross a stream, which is very easy, but then it started raining! Luckily we made it to a nice hotel on the side of the volcano right before it started pouring - and lightning struck, twice, both less than 20 yards away - glad to be indoors for that! After the rain the stream turned into raging rapids with all the water from the volcano rushing down, and we could not cross. This meant finding the road and going the long way around, which presented a problem because the gates close at sunset. Luckily we found a local in a pickup truck who let us pile into the back and gave us a ride back. We made it just before they snapped the lock shut. Because everything turned out okay in the end, it ended up being one of my favorite days.

Moral: Always pay attention to the weather and don't be afraid to pick up a ride.
